“The Murder of Jesse James”
January 23, 2018
Wyatt is at San Quinton sitting across from Wes Gilliam. The convicted double murderer eventually admits that yeah, he knows who Wyatt is and he knows who Jessica was. And if he could change things, he would, but he can’t. Neither of them can.
Wyatt says quietly, barely a whisper, “Not unless I had a time machine.”
Wyatt climbs out of the Omni and marches towards Jiya’s desk. She pulls up the tracking on the Heart of Gold and says it’s jumping all over the place. Luka stopped off in present day San Francisco for an hour to drop off Lucy and then went back to 1780 New York to fix the mess that he angrily says she created. He spits that he couldn’t get anywhere near the Ritten house. So his family is still dead and Rittenhouse survived. He is vexed. VEXED!

Lucy is having dinner with Agent Denise Christopher and her wife Michelle. She’s the first and only colleague that Michelle has met in 17 years. Lucy admits the invitation came as a surprise to her, too.
After dinner, over the dishes, Christopher says she’s been up most nights lately worrying – but not about Rittenhouse. It’s Lucy’s mother that’s been keeping her awake, and the fear that – like Carol – Agent Christopher could lose her children and not know that they ever existed.

Breadcrumbs Luka has dropped along the way point the Time Trio to a bank in Arkansas and something called the “Rittenhouse Key.” Agent Christopher says she’s been looking into Rittenhouse and has come up with a big nothing. She asks Lucy if Luka has said anything more about it since first mentioning it during the Hindenburg.
The Heart of Gold lands in the backyard of NASA employee Wayne Ellis. Luka stands in the open hatch and says they come in peace. And then his henchman shoots Wayne Ellis twice in the chest. Luka takes the man’s freshly minted, newly issued security badge. America is about to put a man on the moon. Can’t be too careful about the Commie threat.
Fellow citizens & compatriots – I am besieged, by a thousand or more of the Mexicans under Santa Anna—I have sustained a continual Bombardment & cannonade for 24 hours & have not lost a man—I shall never surrender or retreat. Then, I call on you in the name of Liberty, of patriotism & everything dear to the American character, to come to our aid, with all dispatch—The enemy is receiving reinforcements daily & will no doubt increase to three or four thousand in four or five days. If this call is neglected, I am determined to sustain myself as long as possible & die like a soldier who never forgets what is due to his own honor & that of his country—Victory or Death. Lt. Col. William Barret Travis The Alamo
Is a date that holds no meaning for Lucy. Which is unfortunate, because that’s when Luka is. After several hours of sciencing, Jiya finds him. It turns out the “negative mass energy” that’s so inconvenient to loose papers has a signature that can be tracked. She puts the Heart of Gold somewhere in the desert within a 50-mile radius of Las Vegas.
Lucy provides the why for the where. She says President Kennedy was in Las Vegas on that date for a DNC fundraiser at the Sands Hotel. Sinatra was the headliner and the room was full of politicians, celebrities, and waste management consultants. Any or all of them could be a target.
The Time Trio suit up and board the Omni. And I kind of love how analog the controls are, with the pushing of buttons and flipping of switches to initiate the launch sequence. It makes the craft feel solid and real in a way that a bank of sleek flat touch screens wouldn’t. The pod’s interior also reminds me of the Millennium Falcon’s cockpit, which I’m sure is no accident.
