Will Ferrell closes out ‘Saturday Night Live’s’ 51st season

Will Ferrell & Paul McCartney

Speculating about when Lorne Michaels will retire has become something of a national pastime. After all, Michaels is 81 years old, and has helmed Saturday Night Live for nearly all 51 of its years on air. So when it was announced that Will Ferrell, one of SNL‘s greatest performers, was hosting the final episode of this season with living legend Paul McCartney as musical guest, the speculation began a’speculating.

Having seen last night’s episode, count me amongst those who are skeptical of the retirement theory. Sure, Paul McCartney came out for an encore at the end of the episode, and performed “Coming Up,” which happened to be the very first song he ever performed on SNL, which was the fifth season finale, and Lorne Michaels’ last episode before he went on a five-year hiatus from the show. And there’s a lot to be read into that, I suppose.

But if I were Lorne, I’d be a little disappointed if last night’s was my final episode. It wasn’t terrible by any stretch, but considering how great Will Ferrell is and can be, and considering how strong the writing has been in the second half of this season, hopes were raised, and the episode just didn’t quite live up to them. Furthermore, while there is a universe in which Lorne does not announce his retirement and just quietly steps away because he doesn’t want all the fuss, I have a very hard time imagining that NBC wouldn’t want to celebrate his tenure in some way, much less not milk every last bit of a final season or even just a few final episodes. I think Lorne will be with the show for a bit longer, and when he finally does take his leave, there will be more former cast members than just Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon to see him out.

Matt Damon proves once again to be a natural ‘Saturday Night Live’ host

Saturday Night Live
Matt Damon and Noah Kahan
May 9, 2026

Somehow, this is only Matt Damon’s third time hosting, which doesn’t seem right? Part of it is that he’s made several cameos on SNL, including quite memorably in 2018 as Brett Kavanaugh, and then in 2024 when he, among many other Not-5-Timers, helped induct Kristen Wiig into the vaunted hosting club. And maybe part of the reason he feels like he’s a regular presence in Studio 8H is because he had a recurring role on 30 Rock and I’m conflating the two? I don’t know.

But cameos are not enough when we’re dealing with someone who is such an obvious SNL host. As I noted the second time he hosted (where I was flabergasted that it was only his second time), Damon is a natural fit with SNL. He doesn’t just have movie star charisma, he’s obviously intelligent and genuinely funny, and he radiates that he’s having a good time on that stage. So what’s the deal? How long is it going to take to get him back on this stage? Because it best not take another 8 years, guys.

Olivia Rodrigo lights up ‘Saturday Night Live’

Saturday Night Live
Olivia Rodrigo
May 2, 2026

Because I am An Old, one of my first introductions to Olivia Rodrigo was in an SNL sketch. I’m sure you know the one: a bunch of dude-bros at a pool hall find themselves singing along with Rodrigo’s song “Driver’s License” and admitting their love for her, despite being, you know, a bunch of dude-bros. At the time, I found the sketch relatable because my husband was (is) a huge Swiftie; but as time went on and I became more familiar with Rodrigo’s work, I became a pretty big fan of her work myself. Dark, fierce, angry, and feminist, Rodrigo gives this older feminist hope that the girlies are going to be OK. Angry — but OK.

As for her first time hosting Saturday Night Live, Rodrigo was unsurprisingly delightful. Like Sabrina Carpenter (and Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake and a bunch of others), Rodrigo began her career as a Disney star, which serves as a great training ground for sketch comedy work. These kids have been professionals their entire lives; performing in front of a live audience doesn’t faze them. And fortunately, Rodrigo’s charms were not wasted on bad writing this week. With the exception of one weak sketch, the night was strong and will go down as one of the better episodes of the season.
