Oh how sweet: we’re in a small church somewhere in Mexico where a parish is still celebrating Mass. It’s nice to see some people stick with tradition and faith and find hope in face of horror and death. Yes, yes, the priest had been worried that God had abandoned from them, but now he knows that they are being tested, that the evil that has befallen them wants them to turn away from Him. It feeds on doubt, and they must not feed it. Instead, they must fight. The parishioners take their communion, and then promptly march outside and grab a weapon from an alarmingly large pile. THEN: “He knows … He just doesn’t think it’s his problem.”
NOW
Metatron is rattling around in the bottom of a dumpster. Finally he comes up yahtzee with a fairly unsullied half of a half of a pastrami on rye. He opens his mouth to wolf it down – but stops. The dog is looking at him. I’m going to call him Scraps. Scraps is Sam’s puppy dog eyes made actual dog. Metatron is powerless against him.
The fallen scribe tosses the hunk of lunch meat to Scraps. A fond smile steals across Metatron’s face, and then it’s back down to the dumpster’s depths. He wrestles with the garbage before finally shouting, “I GIVE UP!”

So, last week we were teased in the previews that Game of Thrones was going back to the past, to the Tower of Joy to finally confirm that theory — you know, THAT theory — once and for all. The Tower of Joy, “R +L = J,” you know nothing Jon Snow, THAT theory. I mean, now that Jon Snow is magically back to life, we might as well get on with it, and learn about who he is and where he came from and what makes him so special, right? RIGHT? Surely they aren’t going to take us all the way to the Tower of Joy, the most anticipated location in all of Game of Thrones history, and NOT tell us what happened there.
… They wouldn’t do that, would they?

Oy, this episode. After two fun, engaging episodes that moved the story along in interesting and unexpected ways, we get this one. It’s not that this episode was bad, exactly, it wasn’t. But compared to the rest of this season, it felt slow and plodding, a workabout episode, intended to get us from Point A to Point Alex and Jack Become Our Protagonists’ Biggest Enemies. (Which is totally going to happen, and I, for one, can’t wait.)
But until then: Continue reading “‘Fear the Walking Dead’: Shipshape”
