John Mulaney comes home to ‘Saturday Night Live’

John Mulaney is BACK! After an event-filled couple of years (more on that in a minute), Mulaney came home to Saturday Night Live to host for the fifth time, earning him a spot in the increasingly less-exclusive Five-Timers Club.

The hosting gig also served as a chance for Mulaney to show the world that he survived the hurricane that hit his life mere days after the last time he hosted in 2020. Mulaney seems older now, a little more tired, a little darker — of course, that’s what happens when life happens to you. But he’s just as funny, just as observant and clever. He seems to have found his grounding; let’s hope he keeps it.

Paul Rudd sorta hosts his sorta fifth episode of ‘Saturday Night Live.’ Sorta.

Saturday Night Live
Paul Rudd & Charli XCS
December 18, 2021

Thanks to this fucking virus that will never go away, Saturday Night Live had to very suddenly sorta-but-not-really cancel its final episode of the year in what feels like a metaphor for the whole 2021 holiday season. The episode, which was supposed to be Paul Rudd’s entry into the five-timers club still happened, but instead of a live production performed in front of a studio audience, the show consisted of a few new filmed pieces set amidst a bunch of classic Christmas sketches from years past. Each sketch was introduced by Rudd, Tom Hanks, and Tina Fey with assists from the only cast members on hand, Kenan Thompson and Michael Che, while a skeleton crew chuckled in the dark. It was weird, it was awkward, it was kinda sad, but God bless them for making the best they could out of a shitty situation. It’s really all any of us can do at this point.

‘Saturday Night Live’: Still not live, still from home

Saturday Night Live
At-Home, Part 2
April 25, 2020

Those wacky kids over at SNL, they did it again. Using Zoom, phones, plenty of wigs and green screens, and a lot of creativity, the cast and writers of SNL managed to put on yet another 90-minute episode satirizing this insane situation we all find ourselves in. They also seemed to have worked out some of the bugs that didn’t work so well for them the last time they tried this (thank you, “Weekend Update,” for losing the laughter — that crutch was there for you guys, not the audience) and have embraced the adage, “brevity is the soul of wit.” Even when a sketch didn’t work — and not all of them did — they never lasted more than about 3 minutes, and your suffering would soon be over. And keeping that in mind, I will get on with it already:

‘Saturday Night Live’: BREAKING NEWS! Jennifer Lopez is attractive

Saturday Night Live
Jennifer Lopez & DaBaby
December 7, 2019

I don’t know if you are aware of this, but Jennifer Lopez is a very attractive woman. I only mention it because the writers at Saturday Night Live seem to believe we were not aware of this, and so they devoted the first full hour of last night’s episode to reminding us that Jennifer Lopez — despite being the unimaginable age of 50 — is, in fact, a very attractive woman. And it’s not that any of the sketches were bad, exactly, it’s just that they were so very repetitive and unimaginative.

And listen, I get it, it’s easy to criticize. I’m not having to come up with 10 original sketches every week — I wouldn’t be able to, I know that. But. If I were in that writers’ room, my pitch would have been to have the very attractive 50-year-old Jennifer Lopez pay tribute to SNL‘s most famous 50-year-old, Sally O’Malley:

Oh well. Missed opportunity.
