Even Emma Stone can’t save this ‘Saturday Night Live’ (though she tries her best)
Saturday Night Live
Emma Stone & BTS

Emma Stone is so charming, so good-natured (or at least seemingly so), so up for anything, that she makes even weak material better with her sheer pluck. That said, “better” isn’t “good,” and as I’ve said about countless other episodes, Emma Stone deserved better than whatever this mess of an episode was. Sure, there were a pair of good sketches that I might fondly remember at the end of this season (but not by the beginning of the next) but there were many more clunkers and sketches that were just flat-out terrible that I feel genuinely sorry for our host.
I am sure Stone will return soon enough to claim that Five Timers Club jacket — the show clearly loves her and trusts her. I just hope when she returns they give her material worthy of her.

‘Saturday Night Live’ returns and Ryan Gosling can’t stop laughing.
Saturday Night Live
Ryan Gosling & Jay-Z

Ryan Gosling is charming as hell, and watching him crack up over mediocre material is about the only thing that saves this uneven Saturday Night Live season premiere. Well, that and Colin Jost and Michael Che finally deciding that maybe Trump shouldn’t be given the benefit of the doubt anymore, that bothsidesism is NONSENSE, and finally taking off the gloves and delivering jokes about our Asshole-in-Chief that have some real bite to them. CALL TRUMP A BITCH AGAIN, MICHAEL CHE! DO IT!
But other than that and Jay-Z’s performances (one in which he wore a Colin K jersey) which unfortunately are not embeddable, this was a fairly unmemorable season opener. Was it terrible? No, but it wasn’t one of those episodes that we will look back on as a highlight of this particular era of SNL, either, charm or no charm.

‘Saturday Night Live’: Emma Stone, you deserved better.
Saturday Night Live
Emma Stone and Shawn Mendes

Here are a couple of positive things I will say about this episode: 1. Emma Stone was as charming and delightful as ever, even while being given some bullshit material to work with. POSTER SKETCH, I’M LOOKING AT YOU. 2. No sketch was over 6 minutes long.
That’s it. That’s pretty much the only positive things I have to say about this episode. Were there some good sketches buried in here? Yes. I am willing to concede that it was not a complete shit show all the way through. But someone as talented as Emma Stone deserved so much better from the writing that she was given last night. Try harder, guys. You can’t just keep expecting Kate McKinnon to come in and save the day each week.
