Maya Rudolph is Mother of House ‘Saturday Night Live’

I don’t know what I can say about Maya Rudolph that hasn’t already been said: she’s a comedic genius, and one-third of what I consider the triumvirate of the greatest SNL female performers of all time, along with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. She is a giddy delight, a talented singer, and she arrived fully loaded for this week’s episode, which thanks to her stewardship managed to be one of the best of the season so far (maybe the best? DON’T @ ME, RYAN GOSLING PEOPLE). Admittedly, not every sketch hit it out of the park, but by God, Maya Rudolph committed to each of them like she believed that they had. I know we can’t hire her back — I know she doesn’t want to come back and be a full-time cast member — BUT CAN’T WE, LORNE? PLEEEEEEEEEASE? PRETTY PLEASE?

Kate McKinnon comes home for Christmas on ‘Saturday Night Live’

In my mind, the pre-Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live has traditionally been hosted by a former cast member — the perfect episode for some nostalgia and a homecoming. However, I did the math, and it turns out that over 49 seasons of SNL, only 10 of the Christmas episodes have been hosted by previous cast members, so go figure!

In any event, it’s the wonderful Kate McKinnon’s first trip back to SNL after having left the show in 2022 after 10 seasons. McKinnon is one of the best SNL performers of the past 20 years, a solid comedian who prefers to go full weird, and who has been the savior of many a sketch. And so I had high hopes for this episode, hopes that I’m afraid were unmet. It wasn’t a bad episode — McKinnon is always fun, she was joined by two other SNL greats, and the annual Christmas Joke Off is one for the ages — but overall, it feels like it could have been so much more.

Natasha Lyonne hosts an exceptional and emotional ‘Saturday Night Live’

It’s almost unfair: Natasha Lyonne is one of my favorites — a wonderful actress and a New York classic, and if she had hosted any other episode, that would be the story. Fortunately, she hosted one of the best episodes of the season. Unfortunately, it was the final episode for four now-legendary cast members: Kyle Mooney; Aidy Bryant; Pete Davidson; and the great Kate McKinnon, who, along with Kennan Thompson, has been carrying this show on her back for ten years now, and that will be what this episode is remembered for. Not that it’s a bad thing: the goodbyes are sweet and funny and well-deserved. I just hope Natasha Lyonne is invited back soon: she had great chemistry with the cast, had terrific comedic timing, and held her own in a challenging episode.
