Charli xcx does her best to keep ‘Saturday Night Live’ from being a turkey

Saturday Night Live
Charli xcx
November 16, 2024

Here’s what I know about Charli xcx: She’s a pop star. She is British. She is responsible for the whole “Brat summer” thing. She’s friends with Troye Sivan who was on The Idol. She had a collaboration with Billie Eilish this summer that was kinda naughty and all over TikTok. What I didn’t know is that she’s been around for about a decade, she’s pretty funny, quite natural in sketches and in front of a live audience, and she’s very happy to make fun of herself and her entire persona.

Now, that said, she wasn’t given a lot of great material to work with this week as the host (and musical guest) of Saturday Night Live. It wasn’t a terrible episode — I can point to countless worse episodes (including last week’s) — but the writers gave her a combination of recurring sketches that are starting to feel a little worn around the edges, and mediocre bits that needed some punching up. The biggest shame, though, is one of the best sketches of the night, and the one where she best shone, was cut for time. I’ll never understand the decision-making process of Mr. Lorne Michaels.

BREAKING: Ryan Gosling and everyone else on ‘Saturday Night Live’

Saturday Night Live
Ryan Gosling & Chris Stapleton
April 13, 2024

Somehow this is only Ryan Gosling’s third time to host Saturday Night Live which … just doesn’t feel right. But according to my sources, the first time he hosted was in late 2015, and then in 2017, and now this week. Which begs the question — HOW DID WE GO SEVEN YEARS WITHOUT RYAN GOSLING HOSTING SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE AGAIN? LORNE?

Because here’s the thing: especially following Barbie, I’m pretty sure the entire world agrees that Ryan Gosling is not just a pretty face, he’s genuinely hilarious, and clearly delights in being funny. But maybe he delights a little too much in being funny, especially if you’re one of those people who hates when the host and/or cast begins breaking mid-scene. Because Ryan Gosling Can. Not. Keep. It. Together.

Hating it when the cast breaks is a legitimate complaint that many people have — I’m old enough to remember Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz making each other crack up which felt like a cheap way to make the audience laugh with them when the sketch wasn’t otherwise working. That said, Gosling’s giggles seem genuine, and they are, like it or not, highly contagious.

Bring him back sooner THAN SEVEN YEARS FROM NOW, Lorne.

Natasha Lyonne hosts an exceptional and emotional ‘Saturday Night Live’

Saturday Night Live
Natasha Lyonne & Japanese Breakfast

It’s almost unfair: Natasha Lyonne is one of my favorites — a wonderful actress and a New York classic, and if she had hosted any other episode, that would be the story. Fortunately, she hosted one of the best episodes of the season. Unfortunately, it was the final episode for four now-legendary cast members: Kyle Mooney; Aidy Bryant; Pete Davidson; and the great Kate McKinnon, who, along with Kennan Thompson, has been carrying this show on her back for ten years now, and that will be what this episode is remembered for. Not that it’s a bad thing: the goodbyes are sweet and funny and well-deserved. I just hope Natasha Lyonne is invited back soon: she had great chemistry with the cast, had terrific comedic timing, and held her own in a challenging episode.
