Walton Goggins’ sexy dirtbag energy fails to enliven a middling ‘Saturday Night Live’

Walton Goggins is having a moment. Thanks to his simultaneous roles in The White Lotus and The Righteous Gemstones, he was all but unavoidable this winter/spring; and let us not overlook his starring role in Fallout, too (which just wrapped filming season two, hooray!).

Of course, Goggins has been serving sexy dirtbag energy for a long while now, delivering memorable performances in Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Vice Principals, and The Shield and going as far back as the original Beverly Hills 90210 where he played “Mike Muchin” in an 1992 episode I’m sure we all remember.

Just look at that collar.

This is a long way to go to say that it took a minute, but Goggins is one of those rare character actors whose talent and charisma has finally been appreciated by the audience at large, and has overcome the odds to become something of a household name. As such, it’s not a surprise he’s hosting Saturday Night Live this week — but it was a surprise at how little the show exploited his particular energy and brand. Of the six characters he played, only two were typical Goggins roles. Otherwise, the episode leaned into surrealist comedy, and relegated Goggins to the straight man, which often felt like a waste of his particular and specific talents.

Saturday Night Live: Cumbernotterrible

Saturday Night Live
Benedict Cumberbatch & Arcade Fire
May 8, 2022

Benedict Cumberbatch first hosted Saturday Night Live on the last episode before the 2016 election. I do not hold this against him, and I blame him for nothing. That said, he should be happy that … other events overshadowed that episode, and most people have little to no memory of the appearance. Because honestly, through no fault of his own, it was not great, to say the least.

On this, his second time on the Studio 8H stage, Cumberbatch, who is a brilliantly talented actor with a natural sense of humor, had much better material to work with. It wasn’t all perfect, heaven knows. But thanks to current events which have many of us laughing through ABSOLUTE RAGING FURY, the material he was given was at times inspired.

Bill Hader was great on ‘Saturday Night Live’ to the surprise of exactly no one.

Bill Hader & Arcade Fire

Veteran Not Ready for Primetime Player, Bill Hader, returned to Saturday Night Live this weekend ahead of the premiere of his new HBO series, Barry, and (for the most part) he was a God damned delight. Hader revisited a number of his classic characters, including Stefon, Devon of “The Californians,” and a number of his celebrity impersonations. (Personally, I would have swapped out Devon for Vincent Price, but 1. that bit is not the same without Kristin Wiig’s wackiness and 2. I am well aware that I am in the minority there.) The rest of the night was a mixed bag, with only one or two sour notes which had more to do with the writers depending too heavily on Hader’s talent for wacky voices and not delivering actually funny material. Alien sketch, I’m lookin’ at you.

Anyway, go ahead and schedule Hader for sometime next season, Lorne, because I already want him to come back.
