Dua Lipa can’t dance her way out of a middling ‘Saturday Night Live’

First things first for my fellow Gen-Xers: what is a Dua Lipa? Glad you asked. Dua Lipa is a gorgeous English/Albanian Grammy-award-winning pop star. I don’t know any of her music, but it’s disco-y and danceable — though, apparently, she’s not exactly known for her dancing. She’s also not exactly known for her comedy stylings, and SNL asking her to be both the host and the musical guest seems like a heavy lift.

That said, I’ve seen a lot of grumbling about this episode, calling it the “worst of the season,” … but, y’all, I remember the Pete Davidson, Bad Bunny, and Shane Gillis episodes, so you’re not going to pull that one over on me. I think this is an example of diminishment by comparison: the previous episode hosted by Ryan Gosling was so beloved and well-received that whoever was tasked with being his follow-up was never going to live up to expectations. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a great episode — but it’s also not as terrible as some are making it out to be.

And honestly, I’m just proud of the writers for restraining themselves from making every sketch about how hot Dua Lipa is. God knows they haven’t been able to resist in the past.

Kristen Wiig comes home for a ‘Saturday Night Live’ Christmas

Kristen Wiig, one of Saturday Night Live‘s most successful female cast members, returned home for the annual Christmas episode. (And I had it in my head for some reason that it’s a tradition for a former cast member to host this particular episode. But going back 20 seasons, I learned it’s only happened a handful of times: Jimmy Fallon has hosted this episode twice; Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted one year; Eddie Murphy hosted this episode last year; and Martin Short hosted this episode a few years back — and that’s it. And now you know this worthless trivia, too.)

BUT AS I WAS SAYING: Wiig returned and was her Wiig-y self: funny, wacky, and game, clearly enjoying herself and the material. Which is why I’m sort of baffled as to why after the grading was done the episode ended up with such a relatively low grade. I don’t remember disliking this episode, but I suppose if you include enough mediocre material, it drags the entire average down.

Natalie Portman hosts a roller coaster of a ‘Saturday Night Live’

Saturday Night Live

Natalie Portman returned to host Saturday Night Live for the first time since 2006, and she was given exactly two very good sketches, a bunch of mediocre crap, and one sketch that was so bad, I think there is a chance it might have been intended as a meta joke on bad sketches. That or it literally needs to be hung up in the Worst Sketches of All Time hall of fame because oh my God it was that bad.

So bad.

Just … terrible.

Like, did they have a bunch of fourth graders visit the studio and then did they invite them to write a sketch and then they felt like they had to perform it because they didn’t want to disappoint a bunch of little kids?

Is one of the lesser writers dying of cancer and this was his dying wish, to have this sketch performed?

Were there terrorists in the building, holding a gun to Lorne Michaels’ head and forcing the show to do this sketch?

Is Saturday Night Live being used as a vehicle to disseminate secret messages to our spies abroad and this sketch was an important code to ensure global security?

Or did the writers think the sketch was so stupid as to come back around to being funny?

Because if so, they were sorely mistaken. Woof. Continue reading “Natalie Portman hosts a roller coaster of a ‘Saturday Night Live’”
