Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

This Jimmy Kimmel story just will not die, and nor should it, as it is one of the worst attacks on the First Amendment we’ve ever seen. Disney, Nexstar, and Sinclair clearly underestimated the situation.

Reportedly, Kimmel and Disney are in talks to bring the show back, but it’s a very delicate situation on both sides. Disney is facing a stock drop and a mass protest with subscribers canceling their subscriptions to Disney+ and Hulu so often, it crashed the site before they took the button down off of the site; Nexstar and Sinclair, while needing the FCC’s approval for business deals are now facing boycotts from viewers who are just now learning their names; and Kimmel, who would be justified to walk away from a network that doesn’t have his back, has to be mindful of the dozens of staffers and vendors who are dependent on the show for their livelihood. Fortunately, the staff will continue to be paid this week, which some are reading as a positive sign that the show will return. Stay tuned.

It’s important to know that this crisis has been brewing for a while now, as tension has escalated between the networks and affiliates and carriage fees. Affiliates (or, really the corporations who own them, like Nexstar and Sinclair) have increasingly been pushing against the increasingly more expensive programming the networks have been providing and wanting to take control over the 9/10 p.m., time slot.

This is interesting: Sinclair had originally planned on airing a tribute to Charlie Kirk during Kimmel’s time slot, but ultimately backed down and placed the show on YouTube instead. HUH.

And ABC canceled a red carpet event for a documentary premiere this weekend, clearly to avoid uncomfortable questions about this Kimmel mess.

When you have Conan O’Brien, Bill Maher, John Oliver, Pedro Pascal, Adam Corolla, Fox News contributors I’ve never heard of, Howard Stern, Greg Gutfeld, and Ted Cruz all on the same side of the argument, you done fucked up.

Note: Pedro Pascal is the face of The Mandalorian & Grogu and Avengers: Doomsday, and Disney really can’t afford to lose him. Additionally, the Oscars are set to be hosted on ABC next year, and Conan is supposed to host — though there are reports he’s rethinking it.

Meanwhile, the ladies at The View have finally addressed the Kimmel situation on the show.

During the Monday, Sept. 22 episode of “The View,” Goldberg opened the show by saying: “Did y’all really think we weren’t going to talk about Jimmy Kimmel? I mean, have you watched the show over the last 29 seasons? No one silences us.”

“When the news broke last week about Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension, we took a breath to see if Jimmy was going to say anything about it first,” Goldberg added. “You cannot like a show and it can go off the air. Someone can say something they shouldn’t and get taken off the air. But the government cannot apply pressure to force someone to be silenced.”

Ana Navarro added: “I don’t understand how in this country, where the First Amendment was made to the Constitution to guarantee freedom of the press and freedom of speech, how the government itself is using its weight and power to bully and scare people into silence.”

“The First Amendment is the first for a reason, because you need to be able to hold those in power accountable,” Alyssa Farah Griffin said.

Goldberg ended with a message of equality.

“We talk about freedom of speech a lot because we are always in somebody’s mess because somebody has decided that we have said something that’s offensive,” she said. “But we fight for everybody’s right to have freedom of speech because it means my speech is free, it means your speech is free.”

FCC head Brendan Carr has made it clear that he has The View in his sights.

Bob Iger’s wife was set to hold a fundraiser for free speech next month. Uh-oh!

And Zohran Mamdani canceled a town hall event on the local New York City ABC station in response to the Kimmel suspension.

Please do not shoot at ABC stations.

President Hate-Monger is now saying “negative” coverage of him is illegal.

And now the Pentagon is trying to say that media outlets will only be allowed to publish stories they have approved? Absolutely the fuck not.

And I KNOW President Stroke Face isn’t out here talking shit about other people’s appearances.

Bless this woman and her positive thinking. I’m pulling for you, PBS!

James Van Der Beek had to bow out of the Dawson’s Creek reunion at the last moment due to illness, and this legitimately bums me out on his behalf. Lin-Manuel Miranda will fill in for him. Feel better!

Everything I’ve ever heard about Bobby Moynihan has suggested that he’s just good folks, which is why it’s ironic that he is commonly mistaken for that creep Horatio Sanz.

Madelaine Petsch would like you to know that she, for one, did not hook up with all her Riverdale castmates, no matter what K.J. Apa had to say about it.

Sherri Shepherd is out here blabbing about how much they are paying The View ladies. (Or how much they paid them, as she hasn’t been on the show in over a decade.)

Issa Rae wants the pilot process to be brought back, but I’m not hopeful.

This is a weird collection of random facts (I have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that Panda Express invented orange chicken, but here we are) but it taught me that Scooby-Doo was heavily inspired by The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and my mind is blown. It’s so obvious when you see it.

Be careful, Tom Holland!

Get well soon, Steve Martin!
