Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News
I really didn’t mean to talk about the Democratic National Convention all week over here — party conventions tend to be boring, staid affairs, geared towards only the true political nerds. This was never my intention. But Y’ALL. Something has gotten into the Democrats this year: THEY ARE FIRED UP, and they are putting on a show.
Last night, Doug Emhoff, and both Michelle and Barack Obama were the big stars of the night, speaking in the primetime hour, and we will get to that in a minute.
But first, we have to talk about the roll call, a typically tedious tradition in which each state officially, and publicly, assigns their delegates for the nominee. Except someone running last night’s convention thought, “Why does it have to be tedious? Why can’t it be fun? What if we brought in a DJ?” And YOU GUYS.
I will admit, when the roll call began and DJ Cassidy introduced himself, I thought, “What nonsense is this?” and some in the crowd seemed equally confused. But after a couple of states gave their speeches and announced their delegates all to their own state-themed background music, everyone got it. Sure, it was fun but it also was a little corny
… that is until we got to Georgia and Lil Jon showed up.
@msnbc Atlanta rapper and producer Lil Jon made a surprise appearance at the DNC to perform “Turn Down for What” during the Georgia delegation’s roll call vote. #news #politics #dnc #kamalaharris #liljon
WHAT???

And he was hardly the only celebrity featured in the roll call:
@pbsnews Some unexpected guests appeared during a ceremonial roll call Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, a chance to nominate Kamala Harris for president in person after the official party roll call took place virtually at the beginning of August. Rapper Lil Jon made a surprise appearance during the delegate roll call for Georgia where he came out performing his and DJ Snake’s song “Turn Down for What.” The rapper changed some of the lyrics to fit the Harris-Walz theme of the evening as well. Actor Sean Astin, known for his roles in the films “Lord of The Rings,” “Rudy” and “The Goonies,” made an appearance for Indiana’s roll call as a delegate. NFL Hall of Fame defensive tackle John Randle spoke on behalf of the Minnesota delegates. Film director and actor Spike Lee joined the New York delegation. And actor Wendell Pierce from shows like “The Wire” and “Suits” joined the Louisiana delegates to present their roll call. #pbsnews #pbsnewshour #newshour #liljon #turndownforwhat #dnc #kamalaharris #harris #democrats #politics #seanastin #vikings #nfl #nflhalloffame #spikelee #thewire #suits #rudy #lotr #celebrities ♬ original sound – pbsnews
But it wasn’t just the music, it was also a moment for the states to share their visions for the party. Tennessee state Rep. Justin Pearson, who was one of the young legislators who was locked out of his own capitol by the GOP over a gun control bill, has a bright future ahead of him:
@nowthisimpact A movement where kids are free from gun violence. A movement where women have the right to choose. A movement where working people get access to economic opportunity. Tennessee state Rep. Justin Pearson’s remarks at the #DNC roll call are a MUST LISTEN.
And my home state brought me to tears:
@awkwardagnostic Eva Longoria representing my Hometown of Corpus Christi and shouting out or Queen Selena Quintanilla Perez! #Texas #CorpusChristi #CecileRichards #EvaLongoria #AnnRichards #TexasDelegates #SelenaQuintanillaPerez #Selena #ComoLaFlor #BidiBidiBomBom #DNC #KamalaHarris #HarrisWalz #TimWalz #JoeBiden #BlueTexas #PresidentBiden #FLIPTEXAS #DemocraticNationalConvention #DNC2024 #VoteBlue #BlueWave #AOC #HilaryClinton #USPolitics #VOTE #Tejano
The split screen between the DNC and the RNC could not be more striking:

OK, BUT THAT’S NOT EVEN THE BEST PART! Because while this roll call was going on, Vice President Harris and Governor Walz weren’t even in the state — they headed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for a rally held at the same arena that the GOP had the Republican National Convention. And so when the ceremonial roll call was done, Kamala Harris came out packed house of 18,000 people in the SAME PLACE that Former President Yuge Rallies was anointed just a month ago, and accepted the nomination. The DNC actually said, “Oh? You like rallies? WE’LL HAVE TWO. IN TWO DIFFERENT STATES. AT THE SAME TIME. AND THEY’LL BE WILD. ”
No, rally crowds do not equal winning.
But this is Milwaukee a few minutes ago. I’ve been in and around political events for a long time, and believe me – this is WILD. pic.twitter.com/aTeb4R7x9f

Just delicious.
And there were a lot of good speakers last night, including Ana Navarro, Stephanie Grisham, Senator Tammy Duckworth, Illinois Governor (and real billionaire) J.B. Pritzker, and Second Husband, Doug Emhoff.

But the stars of the night (and of my heart) were the tag team of Michelle and Barack Obama.

After Disney+ canceled The Acolyte, the racist, sexist branch of Star Wars fans flooded star Amandla Stenberg’s Instagram with hateful comments because they are the fucking worst.
