Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

Last night was the final episode of The Late Show, and DON’T MIND ME, I’M JUST VERY EMOTIONAL RIGHT NOW.

Stephen Colbert’s final guest was not the Pope as he had joked, but Sir Paul McCartney, fittingly returning to the famous Ed Sullivan Theater where Beatlemania fully bloomed.

But Colbert began the night by addressing the audience with a message of gratitude and joy:

“We have done over 1,800 of these shows. And most nights, I come out here, and I talk to the audience beforehand, and tonight, I thought I’d talk to the audience in here and the audience out there at home. This show… has been a joy for us to do for you. In fact, we call this show ‘The Joy Machine.’ All right, Louis [Cato] stole it from us, and we are currently in litigation right now. You better lawyer up, buddy.

“We call it the joy machine because to do this many shows it has to be a machine, but the thing is, if you choose to do with joy, it doesn’t hurt as much when your fingers get caught in the gears, and I cannot adequately explain to you what the people who work here have done for each other, and how we mean to each other. So, I will just say, I will just say to them, you are all the great Achilles whom we knew. Now, on night one of The Colbert Report, back in the day, I said, ‘Anyone can read the news to you. I promised to feel the news at you,’ and I realized pretty soon in this job that our job over here was different. We were here to feel the news with you, and I don’t know about you, but I sure have felt it.

“I just want to let all y’all know, in here and out there, how important you’ve been to what we have done. The energy that you’ve given us, we sincerely need that to have done the best possible for you for the last seven years…. We love doing the show for you, but what we really love is doing the show with you…  Now, I’ll say to you what I’ve said to every audience for the last 11 years, and I have meant it every time. Have a good show. Thanks for being here, and let’s do it, y’all.”

Apparently, this speech is similar to one that he gave every audience before the show would begin filming, which just demonstrates how special he was as a host.

Finally, the show ended with a sci-fi twist, in which the contradiction of his show being the biggest in late-night and simultaneously being canceled created a wormhole that threatens to suck in the entirety of the Ed Sullivan Theater and late-night itself. There are more celebrity cameos, a lot of good digs at Paramount and CBS, and some great musical performances. I don’t want to spoil it for you; you should enjoy it for yourself:

And then, the whole thing ended with the entire theater being sucked into the wormhole and deposited into a snowglobe — a nod to one of the greatest/weirdest series finales ever — as Colbert’s beloved dog Benny gives it a sniff.

Thank you, Stephen. Your show was a joy.

A note about this next post: I spend a lot of time in the Lincoln Center/Columbus Circle area of New York City these days, and there is a woman who, armed with some chalk, almost every day scrawls a message to President Piggy in front of his Trump International Hotel there at 59th street. She’s a personal hero. And so I was not surprised to learn that she went out yesterday to give Stephen Colbert, CBS, and President Goon a message:

I’m going to give y’all the weekend to watch The Boys before I inundate you with links so as to try not to spoil anyone, but this is too good not to share right away. That dork Elon reposted some other dork’s criticism of the finale (which, again, I’m not going to post here to avoid spoilers) with just the word “Pathetic.” And Eric Kripke, he took it the best way possible:

Jeff Probst managed to spoil the finale of Survivor during the finale of Survivor.

The South Park guys will not back down and don’t care.

Oh no, Anderson Cooper hurt Bari Weiss’s fee-fees with his perfectly innocuous comments about 60 Minutes, oh no.

Quick: Who has hosted Saturday Night Live the most times? Can you guess?

Hey, the Mormon Wives are being messy again.

So I keep seeing this all over my social media, and I don’t know what is going on here. My best guess is that he’s using some sort of digital filter, but I agree it’s really weird.

Lupita Nyong’o doesn’t have time for your bitching and whinging. (Something that just occurred to me: the last woman to play Helen of Troy in a big movie was Diane Kruger, who played her in Troy. Both Kruger and Lupita Nyong’o have been romantically involved with Joshua Jackson, who, yes yes, was Pacey, but ALSO starred in DOCTOR ODYSSEY. 🤯)

Congratulations to Morgan Radford!

Get well soon, Kathy Griffin!
