What you’ll be watching on CBS this fall

Well, well, well. Look who decided to get a jump on Upfronts Week. See, usually the networks debut their fall schedules in mid-May, each taking turns in a particular week. But CBS just couldn’t keep it in their pants, apparently, and decided to announce their fall schedule on Tax Day for some reason. But don’t expect any more Upfronts news from the other networks anytime soon; Fox and NBC will be presenting on May 11, and ABC will go on May 12. As for The CW … what even is The CW anymore, you know?

This post is an attempt to organize what we know about what CBS has in store for the fall season: all the new shows, all the renewed shows and, R.I.P. — all the canceled shows. News is fluid right now, so check back in as I will continue to update these posts.

New Fall Shows

NCIS: New York (CBS)
NCIS: New York

Video to Come

Official synopsis: Legendary NCIS Agent Sam Hanna (LL COOL J) returns to his hometown of New York City to their field office, partnering with a roguish agent (Scott Caan) and helping lead a new team as they are tasked with high-stakes missions to defend one of the most vital cities and ports in the world.

T’s Take: So, this is something of a surprise as there had been no news about CBS developing yet another NCIS spinoff. And yet … it’s not a surprise at all. The sun is going to rise in the East; the sun will set in the West; CBS is going to do an NCIS spinoff. Scott Caan seems like the obvious choice to play against LL Cool J, and I suspect this series will last one million years.

Eternally Yours (CBS)
Eternally Yours

Video to Come

Official synopsis: A family comedy centered around Charles (Ed Weeks) and Liz (Allegra Edwards) – a vampire couple whose once-passionate romance has devolved into a pulseless marriage after 500 years together. Living in present-day Seattle with their oddball coven, they’ve settled into an eternal rut – until their daughter’s earnest human boyfriend unexpectedly enters their lives and forces them to confront whether their love can survive forever … or if forever is a life sentence.

T’s Take: Now for shows I’m genuinely excited for, starting with Eternally Yours. This comes from the team who gave us Ghosts, so they know their way around a supernatural comedy. The cast is great (from what I can tell, Parker Young is going to play the “earnest human boyfriend” which he is perfect for), and while I don’t think it will fill the What We Do in the Shadows-shaped hole in my heart, I have confidence it will work as a comedy.

Cupertino (CBS)
Cupertino

Video to Come

Official synopsis: A David vs. Goliath legal drama set in the heart of Silicon Valley that follows a lawyer (Mike Colter) who is being cheated out of his stock options by his former employer, a tech startup. Refusing to back down, he joins forces with another recently fired attorney (Rachel Keller) to represent those taken advantage of by the tech elite and help them fight back in a high-stakes battle against the Goliaths controlling Silicon Valley.

T’s Take: The geniuses behind The Good Wife, The Good Fight, Elsbeth, and, my favorite, Evil, are back with this take on Silicon Valley. While I feel like the subject might be a little played out, I’m happy to give it a chance because from here on out, I will watch anything Michelle and Robert King create and Mike Colter stars in.

Midseason

Einstein

Video to Come

Official synopsis: Einstein stars Matthew Gray Gubler as Lewis Einstein, the brilliant but directionless great-grandson of Albert Einstein. He spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his reckless antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective (Melissa Fumero) solve her most puzzling cases.

T’s Take: This is another favorite CBS genre: the genius procedural. Einstein is just the latest in a long line of crime dramas that rely on a quirky genius. Think: Num3ers, Scorpion, Person of Interest, even Criminal Minds. I will say I’m happy to see Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Melissa Fumero in a leading role again, and one of the head writers has a strong CV, having been the head writer on Monk, and having spent years on the writing staffs of both Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. Keep your eye on this one.

Additionally, Ghosts, Matlock, and NCIS: Sydney will return midseason.
