We have lost David Lynch, the genius filmmaker and artist who created Twin Peaks, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Inland Empire, Wild at Heart, Dune, Elephant Man, The Straight Story and so many other pieces of art.
Leaving aside how I feel about his films (VERY STRONGLY), Twin Peaks literally created the golden age of television. On network TV, David Lynch broke every single rule of what TV can do, should do, could be. It was a brilliant experiment that merged every genre: drama, comedy, mystery, horror, sci-fi … it was everything all at once. Without Twin Peaks, we literally wouldn’t have had Lost, or Severance, or True Detective, or The Sopranos, or Hannibal, or Atlanta, Stranger Things, Fargo, Mr. Robot, Fringe, or The X-Files, just to name a few.
Twin Peaks was weird and wonderful and a work of art. And David Lynch was a singular imagination and human being. I am heartbroken.
“I loved David’s films. ‘Blue Velvet,’ ‘Mulholland Drive’ and ‘Elephant Man’ defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade,” Steven Spielberg said in a statement. “I got to know David when he played John Ford in ‘The Fabelmans.’ Here was one of my heroes — David Lynch playing one of my heroes. It was surreal and seemed like a scene out of one of David’s own movies. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”
#RIPDavidLynch, a gracious man and fearless artist who followed his heart & soul and proved that radical experimentation could yield unforgettable cinema. https://t.co/uMsAxrzKFx

Like Kafka, like Bacon, he dedicated his life to opening a portal. He was the first to show me another world, a beautiful one of love and danger I sensed but had never seen outside sleep. Thank you David your gift will reverberate for the rest of my life. https://t.co/pK2GDycV1Y

Most of us don’t remember our dreams, or if we do their images are hazy. Like a cartographer you mapped yours and in doing so helped the world navigate theirs.
Thank you for your gifts and your dreams. #RIP https://t.co/SBfbImEuao

No one saw the world like David Lynch. The world lost a master of cinema today.

Of course he could not have known the depths of gratitude that that “thank you” was meant to convey. Thank you, David Lynch. What a legacy he leaves behind. All my love to his family and creative collaborators and those who loved him.

David Lynch said that filmmaking should be fun & joyful. Of course it can be hard work. Of course the work itself can encompass all kinds of pain & painful truth. But the act of creation itself should be full of joy. I think about that all the time.RIP David Lynch. You are immortal.

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News
We have the Writers Guild Association nominees, and look, Shōgun and Hacks (maybe The Bear) are going to win the big Drama and Comedy categories, but I’m just happy to see The Boys be nominated. Similarly, The Producers Guild of America has named their nominees, and, again, Shōgun and Hacks (maybe The Bear) have this on lock.
Lorne Michaels will donate his Saturday Night Live archives to the University of Texas.
You won’t believe the people Saturday Night Live didn’t hire.
Daring hot take: The Bachelor has a size inclusivity problem. YEAH, NO SHIT. They’ve cast three (3) men — and only men — who were larger than your average contestant.
Nothing either of these people say gives me confidence that they are going to get married.
Conan O’Brien is receiving the much-deserved Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
The Super Bowl will stream on Tubi.
Sally Struthers is out here talking shit about Betty White and Norman Lear. TREAD CAREFULLY, SALLY.
Listen, you can accuse Ryan Murphy of many things, but you have to give him at least partial credit for reviving a number of older actresses’ careers, and helping the trend of television being an acceptable medium for big matinee names to join. It’s not just Kathy Bates, it’s also Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy, and Naomi Watts, and Susan Sarandon, and Demi Moore and so many others.
Another chapter in the Wendy Williams drama: she gave an interview to “The Breakfast Club” this morning where she denies the allegations that she is cognitively declined, and says that she feels like she is “in prison” at the wellness facility her guardianship placed her in.
Wolf Blitzer is getting demoted. Sure, it’s not being called that, but come on.
More Sex and the City/Charlotte news: the show tried to screw Kristin Davis and Charlotte over during the filming of the pilot, but she called her lawyer. Always call your lawyer.
If you were wondering, yes, your dog really is watching TV.
Heal quickly, Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan.
Pol-UGH-tics
The biggest news of the day is that a tentative cease-fire between Israel and Hamas has been brokered, helped by a team that represented both the Biden administration and the incoming Former President Invade-Greenland-Elect’s people. (So of course he’s taking all the credit for it.)
President Biden gave a farewell address from the Oval Office last night that sounded … ominous. Fuck them billionaires.
And Karine Jean-Pierre gave her final White House press briefing. Can’t wait for the clown show to return.

And the outgoing FCC Chair warned that the agency should not become a tool that the President uses against his perceived enemies: “We draw a bright line at a moment when clarity about government interference with the free press is needed more than ever,” Rosenworcel said in a statement. “The action we take makes clear two things. First, the FCC should not be the President’s speech police. Second, the FCC should not be journalism’s censor-in-chief.”
Speaking of: Seth Meyers addressed Former President TV-Tray-Elect’s attack on him in the most subtle and shadiest way possible: “If you’re a Pete Hegseth fan, here’s the bad news: I’m about to do jokes at his expense….And you might be saying, ‘Seth, why would a Pete Hegseth fan be watching your show?’ Fair point. It has come to my attention that sometimes people who do not care for me get stuck watching my show. And to those people, I would just say: you have my sympathy, and I hope you get a TV soon that allows you to change the channel.”
