Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News
The Emmys finally happened, and I managed to catch the last half when my U-Verse was FINALLY restored. ~shakes fist at AT&T~ I am unlikely to do a Not!Live Blog because I have chosen to be honest with both myself and you and also I’m cold and cranky. (My house does not retain the heat, and I am currently writing this wearing a coat, gloves, a knit cap, and long underwear under my sweater and jeans.) So instead, I’m going to link to a list of all the winners and point out some of last night’s highlights:
Basically, The Bear, Succession, and Beef won everything. Deadline breaks down the winners by program and network if you’re interested. And it’s official: after 53 Emmy nominations, Better Call Saul took home 0.
Speaking of snubs, here’s the Sunny cast calling out the Emmys for never nominating them despite 1. being on the air for 16 seasons and 2. being one of the funniest shows on television. They didn’t say that last part, but come on.
16 años al aire y nunca nominaron a NADA a It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. La serie más criminalmente menospreciada de la tele yanqui. Y este pedacito fue de lo mejor en la ceremonia. #Emmys pic.twitter.com/5qmbncRjAX

After Kieran Culkin told Pedro Pascal to “suck it” when he won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Series, Pedro Pascal responded at the Emmys:
"A lot of people have been asking about my arm. Kieran Culkin beat the shit out of me." — Pedro Pascal at the #EMMYs pic.twitter.com/Uieq8m5KHr

And that is hilarious but honestly, it’s Culkin’s death stare that makes it.
After suggesting that the SAG Awards last February would be her last awards show due to her struggle with MS, Christina Applegate came out to present Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, and received a standing ovation from the crowd. She was self-deprecating and hilarious and wonderful. Just a treasure.

And Elton won the category, making him an EGOT. (Which, interestingly enough, only really became a thing when 30 Rock made it one.)
Roy Wood Jr. had a message for The Daily Show:
chill fam I was trying to do that in the low 😂😂 https://t.co/kW1AD4yxhN

And there were a bunch of reunions: Ally McBeal; The Sopranos; Martin; Grey’s Anatomy; and Cheers.
The In Memoriam left some people out, AND THE PIPER LAURIE ERASURE WILL NOT STAND.
And now some of the best speeches:

And here are some of the most memorable fashions if you’re into that kind of thing.
Finally, there’s a lot of talk about why The Bear won as a comedy when it’s not a particularly funny show. A brief explanation that will be unsatisfactory: It’s all about manipulating the Emmy categories. For a long time, if a show was 30 minutes long, it was classified as a comedy; if it was an hour long, it was a drama. The Emmys changed the rules in 2015, saying that they would no longer take the length of the show into consideration when it came to how it is categorized. Instead, the material has to be “primarily comedic” for six episodes to be considered a comedy, and “primarily dramatic” to be a drama. But that’s largely subjective, and for whatever reason, we still associate 30 minutes = comedy; 1 hour = drama. As a result, a show like The Bear can compete in the comedy category where it won’t be up against a show like Succession to whom it would certainly lose. And since it was arguably one of the two best shows on TV last year, voters are going to vote for it, not taking into consideration whether or not it actually made them laugh as much as Abbott Elementary or Jury Duty.

Beef creator Lee Sung Jin suggests that the series could be an anthology if Netflix is interested. Considering how big they won last night, Netflix would be foolish to not jump on this.
I understand that TV reporters feel like they are compelled to ask the cast members of recently ended shows if they will do a spinoff, but I wish they wouldn’t. Succession was perfect and ended perfectly. Let’s leave it at that already.
You’re going to have to wait another year for the third season of Yellowjackets.
A fourth Psych movie is written and ready to go — Peacock just has to greenlight it.
#MeToo
Mariska Hargitay wrote an incredibly honest and moving essay for People Magazine revealing that she is a rape survivor. I found this to be the most powerful part:
Sexual violence persists not because of something unchangeable in our human condition, it exists because power structures are in place that allow it to happen. Those power structures are so pervasive that no one is immune from them. They breed thoughts like “I must have done something to cause this.” And our society agrees: “Yes, you brought this upon yourself.” That is false and it must change. The violence ends when the power structure changes.
She is brave and inspiring, and I hope she finds the peace she so richly deserves.
Oh hey, Vincent Gallo has been accused of making sexually explicit comments to women auditioning for his upcoming James Franco movie about the Golden State Killer, The Policeman. Using the example of forcing an actress to perform fellatio on him, he threatened her to not complain about anything he may ask them to do because “the victim didn’t have a choice, and neither will you as the actress…” Another complaint accused Gallo of acting out his torture porn fantasies. If you remember what he did to Chloe Sevigny, this is hardly surprising. I don’t know, if I were James Franco and had been accused by multiple women of being inappropriate, I might not have joined a Vincent Gallo project.
Sean “Diddy” Combs will not be attending the Grammys following the multiple allegations made against him.
Jonathan Majors has been fired from playing Dennis Rodman in the upcoming feature film 48 Hours in Vegas.
Jonathan Majors also needs to keep Coretta Scott King’s name out of his mouth.
Chris Cuomo once sent former CNN contributor Angela Rye a text message calling her “tinsel crotch.” This man.
A French actress, Judith Godrèche, has come forward accusing director Benoît Jacquot of having a relationship with her when she was 14 and he was 40, a relationship that was at the time out in the open, and other adults did not look sideways at.
Emmy-winner Sarah Snook opened up about how she was told early in her career that she was a “nobody,” that they would have “change all of [her]”: “we’ll whiten your teeth, darken your hair, we’ll give you a personal trainer so you can lose weight and look the part” and she was yelled at for eating a piece of cake. Very normal and healthy.
Natalie Portman says that women can’t afford to be method actors: “I don’t think that children or partners would be very understanding of, you know, me making everyone call me ‘Jackie Kennedy’ all the time.” She’s not wrong.
