In which I spend entirely too much time talking about ‘The View’s’ Sunny Hostin’s response to the Cornell 7 story

I need more videos of animals in their Halloween costumes while riding on Roombas, please and thank you.

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

When the Cornell story broke last week, the women of The View discussed it, and Sunny Hostin, the show’s resident lawyer, had a very legalese response to it, saying that, based on New York law, had she been the prosecutor, she wouldn’t have brought charges against the men, either.

It was a shocking moment but ultimately a complicated argument based on a very bad law that basically says if you become “voluntarily intoxicated,” you are not incapacitated to give consent. So no matter how blackout drunk you might be, if you chose to drink or consume drugs, it is virtually impossible for you to seek justice if you are sexually assaulted. Super cool, New York State!

Hostin then went on to say that she had read the victim’s statement, and nowhere in it did it say she had been raped. (It came out later that the Cornell police condensed her statement to a 6-page report, leaving out the claim that she had been raped.) As you might imagine, some people felt Hostin was taking the men’s side and were outraged. In fact, actress Cynthia Erivo reached out to Hostin to admonish her to lead with empathy.Β

And, look, I get it, I’m married to a lawyer, and he can be INFURIATING when discussing things like this, because while lawyers are just explaining the law, to non-lawyers it can sound like they are defending bad laws that prevent real justice from being served. (For instance, my husband’s argument for why Cornell didn’t tell the prosecutors that the victim said she had been raped might have been that thanks to the voluntary intoxication loophole, it ultimately wouldn’t matter, because it couldn’t be prosecuted anyway. To the rest of us normal people, it sure sounds like Cornell was covering their ass.)

Which, if I’m being generous, is what I think was going on with Hostin here; she was trying to take the emotion out of the situation and approach it from a purely legal perspective. THAT SAID, Ms. Hostin seemed to have left out the curious little detail that her daughter is currently going to Cornell, and therefore might have her own reasons to defend the University’s actions (or non-actions, as the case may be). Stay tuned.

David Ellison doesn’t even like President Mushroom Dick like that, you guys, no, really, he totally means it.

Oh, and yes, they absolutely intend to make HBO Max and Paramount+ a single streaming service; it just won’t happen immediately.

As for the two historic studio lots, they are talking about using one for movies and one for TV and streaming. Hopefully that will work out well enough that neither lot will need to be sold.

Jessica Chastain criticized Apple TV for pulling The Savant after Charlie Kirk’s murder, and she doesn’t regret a thing.

When Chris Colfer was asked about returning for a Glee reboot, he provided a master class in “threading the needle”: 1. He knows nothing about it; 2. It would be difficult to do with so many cast members who have passed; but 3. He knows the fans want it. An answer for every possibility.

Color me shocked that Roseanne Barr hated her writing staff on Roseanne. That doesn’t sound like the calm, reasonable, good-natured Roseanne we all know!

Well, this will be the most disturbing thing you’ll see all day. Can we please do something about AI slop already? Please?

Sean Combs tried to sue NBCUniversal over their documentary Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy, but he lost and now he has to pay them almost $500,000. Whoops!

I admit, I’m not a comic book nerd, and I don’t care for the superhero genre in general, so I acknowledge this isn’t for me, and I don’t get it. But it will never not be funny to me how worked up the fans get about seeing (or not seeing) the heroes in their fancy little costumes.
