Hey, I’m back. Did I miss anything?

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News
So, I missed the biggest story of the summer by one day: the Emmy nominations. I KNOW. But here’s what to know:
- Here is a partial list of nominees. For the full list, find it at Emmys.com.
- By the numbers: The Pitt had the most nominations with 25; Hacks followed with 24; Widow’s Bay had 19; Pluribus was nominated with 18. (And it just so happens that these were my four favorite shows of the year.) Beef received 16; DTF: St. Louis had 13; and Saturday Night Live and Spider-Noir both received 11 apiece.
- Hacks broke the record for most nominations for a comedy in a single season, surpassing The Studio last year.
- By the networks: HBO had the most nominations with 122; Netflix received 111; Disney (which includes ABC, Hulu, Disney+, FX, and National Geographic) also had 111; Apple TV received 87; Prime Video received 28; Peacock had 18; and Paramount+ received 1 (one). ~sad trombone sound~ ABC had 38; CBS had 32; NBC received 30; Fox received 3.
- The late-night category has been overhauled into Outstanding Variety Series. The nominees are The Daily Show; Jimmy Kimmel Live!; Last Week Tonight with John Oliver; The Late Show with Stephen Colbert; and Saturday Night Live.
- The good news is that with the new organization, there is room for multiple winners in this category:
… instead of Emmy voters being asked to identify a category winner, voters will be asked about each nominee, “Does this nominee merit an Emmy? Yes/No.” Any nominee that reaches a 90 percent “Yes” threshold will receive an Emmy. If no nominee reaches the 90 percent threshold, then the nominee with the highest “Yes” percentage will be the sole winner. - Jason Bateman, Colman Domingo, Laurie Metcalf, Nick Offerman, and Matthew Rhys all earned multiple acting nominations.
- Of those nominated this year, shockingly, Carrie Coon, Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Keri Russell, Steve Carell, and Janelle James have never won an Emmy.
- Two of The Pitt‘s nominees were self-submitted because HBO didn’t submit them.
- Sit down for this one: All’s Fair is now tied with The Wire for Emmy nominations.
Everyone has a “snubs and surprises story,” so I’ll try to summarize.
BIGGEST SNUBS:
- The Comeback for Outstanding Comedy
- The Amazing Race for Reality Competition Program
- Jeremy Strong and Ebon Moss-Bachrach for The Bear
- Sheryl Lee Ralph for Abbott Elementary
- Bowen Yang for Saturday Night Live

- Jon Hamm for Your Friends and Neighbors
- Selena Gomez for Only Murders in the Building
- Paul Anthony Kelly for Love Story
- Too few nods for The Chair Company, Half Man, The Morning Show, Stranger Things, The Boys, Euphoria, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
- Nothing at all for Industry
- Nothing for The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins
- Nothing for Matlock
- Nothing for I Love LA
- Nothing for Elsbeth
- Nothing for the entire Taylor Sheridan universe
BIGGEST SURPRISES:
- Ariana Madix for Host of a Reality Competition
- Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for Lead Actor in a Comedy for Wonder Man
- Riz Ahmed for Lead Actor in a Limited Series for Bait
- Connor Storie for Guest Actor in a Comedy for Saturday Night Live

Here’s where you can watch every nominated series.
The Daytime Emmys were also announced yesterday.
If you’re in the market for a dragon-haunted castle, do I have the listing for you.
What does Netflix have against the cruise industry? (Except that the cruise industry is an easy target.)
Let your dream of a Hacks spinoff die already; it’s unfortunately not going to happen.

Keeping in character, the head of the FCC, Brendan Carr, proposed to lift the ownership cap, which prevents broadcasters from owning stations that cover more than 39% of households. YEP. LET’S CONSOLIDATE OWNERSHIP OF ALL TV STATIONS TO ONE OR TWO COMPANIES. CAN’T SEE ANY PROBLEM WITH THAT.
Netflix is struggling with a sophomore slump issue, baffled by why viewers aren’t tuning in for shows’ second seasons. Dear Netflix: please take a lesson from The Pitt, which returns every year, not two or three (or more) years later. Novel concept, I know. Additionally, though I love a binge, the truth is the model that releases an episode a week creates more buzz, and as a result, more loyalty from viewers, who in turn are going to be more inclined to look forward to another season. Again: The Pitt, Widow’s Bay, The Boys, Game of Thrones. These shows have been enormously popular and brought viewers back every week because people have had time to anticipate the next episodes and become excited for them. Breaking a season into two parts just isn’t the same thing. Also, don’t be so quick to cancel series: allow them to build an audience, give them time to find the series before you let a series go. Finally, fix your algorithm to make it easier to find shows that viewers have previously watched when a new season drops. Why is this such a mystery?
Speaking of, what are your thoughts on that “proof of life” photo? Other than it should be the easiest thing to do to prove you are alive, and this ain’t it.
Fox News is having a ratings drop. Oh no. (It’s still the most-watched cable news, though, so don’t get too excited.)
Reportedly, 60 Minutes is considering bringing on these two CBS reporters. Better than some random podcasters, I suppose.
