The Oscar nominations are out, and some history has been made: Sinners became the most-nominated movie in Oscar history with 16 nominations; Timothée Chalamet became the youngest man to receive three nominations; and Emma Stone became the youngest woman to have received seven nominations. Enough time has passed since Disney embarrassed him by bringing Jimmy Kimmel back on air, so Brendan Carr is once again threatening late-night and daytime talk shows. He’s returning to his claim that such shows do not “qualify for the bona fide news exemption” that would allow them to circumvent a rule that requires a show offer rival political candidates equal time. Meaning, if The View invites Jasmine Crockett on for an interview, they would have to invite John Cornyn, too. (And maybe James Talarico, and Wesley Hunt, and Ken Paxton, and every other nutjob running in the Republican primary.) It’s just the FCC trying to scare talk shows out of discussing political issues at all, and as Pajiba points out, it might backfire specifically, because the candidates only have to be offered equal time; they don’t have to accept it, and why would some of them?:
I would genuinely love to see a parade of Republican bozos appear on the programs of Jimmy Kimmel and Seth Meyers, or even The View. They would get destroyed. Why would any Republican want to appear on a television program they know is going to be openly hostile toward them? Why would they risk a viral clip of themselves bumbling through a defense of, say, the president’s wildly unpopular attempt to take over Greenland?
Love Island USA was the most-streamed show last year, with 18 billion minutes streamed. This seems pretty shocking until you remember that there are literally 37 hour-long episodes a season. That’s too many episodes of ANYTHING, much less a reality dating show that makes The Bachelor seem like an exercise in intellectual stimulation.
Netflix is also getting into the vertical video business.
David Ellison continues to try to drag this thing out. Now he’s extending the deadline for his $30/share offer for all of Warner Bros. Discovery, which Warner Bros. has repeatedly declined. Go away, dude.
Last Sunday’s 60 Minutes episode, which featured the buried story about the El Salvador mega-prison CECOT tanked in the ratings, thanks to being pitted against the NFL playoffs, just as Bari Weiss intended.
Finn Wolfhard’s SNL episode slipped in the ratings from the previous episode and from the episode that aired a year ago in the same spot, which is only surprising to me based on the number of people screaming at me about it on my Threads account.
And now Prime Video is claiming that Fallout is one of its top four returning series, though they aren’t offering any actual numbers. So who even knows.
