Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

I promise one day, and one day very soon, Jimmy Kimmel Live! won’t be the biggest story over here. But that day is not today, as his show returned last night and he delivered a highly anticipated monologue.

He stuck the landing:

Just a TV history note: Kimmel’s first line, “As I was saying before I was interrupted,” is what Jack Parr said when he returned to The Tonight Show after walking out for seven weeks when NBC cut a joke of his.

Kimmel struck the right note — thanking those who stood up for him, including both his late-night comrades and heroes, and, importantly, those he disagrees with, including Tucker Carlson and Ted Cruz.

He became choked up at the thought that people believed he was cheering on Charlie Kirk’s death:

“It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man,” he said. “I don’t think there’s anything funny about it. I posted a message on Instagram the day he was killed, sending love to his family and asking for compassion, and I meant it. I still do. Nor was it my intention to blame any specific group for the actions of what was obviously a deeply disturbed individual. That was the opposite of the point I was trying to make, but I understand that to some it felt ill-timed or unclear, or maybe both, and for those who think I did point a finger, I get why you’re upset. If the situation were reversed, there’s a good chance I’d have felt the same way. I have many friends and family members on the other side who I love and remain close to even though we don’t agree on politics at all. I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone. This was a sick person who believes violence is the solution, and it isn’t. Ever.”

And he celebrated Kirk’s widow for forgiving his killer as a Christian gesture:

“That is an example we should follow. If you believe in the teachings of Jesus, as I do, there it was, that’s it: a selfless act of grace and forgiveness from a grieving widow. It touched me deeply. If there’s anything we should take from this tragedy to carry forward, I hope it can be that.”

He made clear that this wasn’t about him or his show, but that it’s vital “that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this.”

“The president of the United States made it very clear he wants to see me and the hundreds of people who work here fired from our jobs. Our leader celebrates Americans losing their livelihoods because he can’t take a joke. He was somehow able to squeeze Colbert out of CBS. Then he turned his sights on me, and now he’s openly rooting for NBC to fire Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers and the hundreds of Americans who work for their shows who don’t make millions of dollars. And I hope that if that happens or if there’s even any hint of that happening, you will be 10 times as loud as you were this week. We have to speak out against this because he’s not stopping.”

“And it’s not just comedy. He’s gunning for our journalists, too. He’s suing them. He’s bullying them. Over the weekend, his Foxy friend Pete Hegseth announced a new policy that requires journalists with Pentagon press credentials to sign a pledge, promising not to report information that hasn’t been explicitly authorized for release. That includes unclassified information. They want to pick and choose what the news is. I know that’s not as interesting as muscling a comedian, but it’s so important to have a free press, and it is nuts that we aren’t paying more attention to it.”

And he revealed the conditions Disney put on him to return the show to the air:

“A lot of people have been asking me if there are conditions for my return to the air, and there is one. Disney has asked me to read the following statement, and I have agreed to do it. Here we go: ‘To reactivate your Disney+ and Hulu account, open the Disney+ app on your smart TV or TV-connected device.’”

He also returned to mocking President Thin Skin because, honestly, fuck that guy.

Ahead of the taping, Kimmel posted this tribute to Norman Lear, First Amendment warrior, on Instagram:

Meanwhile, our President had his own dumb thoughts on social media, completely undermining all of his surrogates’ arguments that this was merely a business decision, and not a trampling of the First Amendment:

Oh, here’s Roseanne Barr making this whole thing about herself. The difference, Roseanne, is that when ABC fired you, they made a business decision that they would lose viewers if they continued platforming an insane racist. They were not pressured by the government and President of the United States to fire you, honey.

And look who finally came out in support of Kimmel now that there won’t be any real consequences for doing so.

And a reminder: Jimmy Kimmel Live! might have “returned” but there are huge swaths of the country where it is still not airing because two companies, Nexstar and Sinclair, are still sucking up to the criminal FCC.

Reminder: if you are in one of the affected areas in that map above, you can watch Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Hulu and YouTube soon after the initial broadcast.

Psst … Disney is raising their prices on you, and kinda hoping this doesn’t attract your attention.

In related news, Apple has postponed indefinitely the series The Savant, which had been scheduled to premiere this Friday. The series, which stars Jessica Chastain, is based on a true story about a woman who infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to prevent domestic terror events. Variety reports:

Having watched the eight-episode series for review — which was set to be under embargo until Sept. 25 — it’s clear that “The Savant” is precisely the type of show America needs right now. It looks at a sector of mostly white male individuals who believe that America belongs to them. Fueled by hate, bigotry, xenophobia and misogyny, they talk cruelly and candidly online about enacting harm and violence toward individuals or “others” who they feel are unworthy of being in “their” country. Nowhere in the show does it mention Donald Trump’s name, and other than depicting white nationalists in a negative light, “The Savant” is a straightforward, non-controversial character study — and a well-paced thriller — about one woman trying to stop domestic terrorism.

Amazing that we’ve come to a place where corporations are AFRAID OF OFFENDING WHITE SUPREMACISTS. I am old enough to remember when the Klan and Nazis were the bad guys.

Star Jessica Chastain has some thoughts about The Savant being pulled, and she’s not happy:

Vice President Kamala Harris returned to The View for the first time following the interview that some claimed destroyed her campaign. Personally, I don’t think her refusal to say she would do anything different than President Biden is what sunk her; I think the fact that she was a woman of color was always going to be reason enough for many people to not vote for her. But I guess I’m in the minority.

Look. Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson are filming a movie together, so I take all these rumors about them becoming romantically involved with the same sized grain of salt that I took a bout the stories about Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson being involved during the Naked Gun media rollout. That said, these two definitely have chemistry, which was why I was always Team Pacey.

That Charlie Sheen Netflix documentary is both an attempt for Sheen to resurrect his career, and contains all the evidence for why that shouldn’t happen.

It’s your chance to own some Muppet history.

Who better to model New York Yankees gear than former employee, George Costanza?
