I’m not going to talk about the chaos of the tariffs except to note that President Doesn’t Know What the Fuck He’s Doing clearly panicked at the collapse of the bond market and pulled back almost all of the tariffs (except for the ones on China which he increased so that he doesn’t look weak) while claiming some sort of “victory” to save his big fat orange face. This isn’t a strategy, he’s not playing 4-D chess, his economic plan was always a dumb one, it proved to be dumb in practice, and now we are furiously back pedaling away from it before more of his billionaire friends lose their shit on him for tanking the economy.
And the thing that really grinds my gears is his idiot cult members are going to look at the Dow Jones rebound today and say, “SEE? HE’S A GENUIS.” Except that this is the arsonist patting himself on the back for calling the fire department after he set the forest on fire. Regardless of whether the markets rebound today or this week or this quarter, uncertainty is NO WAY TO RUN AN ECONOMY. No one is going to want to invest in anything anywhere or make trade deals or make plans for their own businesses when they know President Lunatic could threaten to crash the whole thing again on a fucking whim. ANYWAY I’M DONE TALKING ABOUT TARIFFS.
What I do want to talk about are a couple of media stories:
Paramount and President Constitution Arsonist have agreed on a mediator for the completely baseless 60 Minutes lawsuit. Mediation doesn’t have to be completed until December, so this thing could be hanging over Paramount’s head for a while.
“I mean, if you run Disney, which I guess I work for now, I’ve sat through” — here, he imitates a studio head before the death of DEI — “‘We really care for you and want to make sure you have access to health care.’ Speak the fuck up!” he yells, this time loud enough for everyone, even through the din, to hear.
“And Jeff Bezos,” he continues, “fucking speak up!”
There are a million other terrible things happening, like the deportations of innocent people to foreign jails, the searching of social media of international visitors, the removal of Harriet Tubman and mentions of slavery from the Underground Railroad National Parks page, the disbanding of the department in the Justice Department that investigates cyrpto crime, the freezing of university funds, the banning of fluoride in water systems, terminating funding for the World Food Program, restoring Mel Gibson’s gun rights, and Stephen A. Smith musing that he might run for President (ABSOLUTELY NOT).
But look to the bright spots, too. Millions of protestors in all 50 states came out this weekend to speak out against this adminstration and their dumbass policies.
The demonstrations don’t just show that the president’s bad policies are penetrating the consciousness of the greater electorate; they also function as tangible evidence that Trumpism isn’t popular and that the larger electorate won’t just go along with it. “[The protests] prove that the Trumpist regime’s main justification for its authoritarian assertion of power—that Trump has a ‘mandate,’ that he’s enacting the ‘will of the people,’ that his agenda represents a broad consensus—is a dangerous lie that we must not perpetuate,” historian Thomas Zimmer, a visiting professor at Georgetown, tells me. “They remind others that such acts of public defiance are indeed possible; they encourage people who may have felt alone or defeated; they create community even across large geographical distances.”

And on a note very close to home, more than 500 law firms signed onto the friend-of-the-court briefs in support of Perkins Coie, one of the law firms that is challenging the White House over the Executive Order he issued against them. Unfortuantely, of those ~500 law firms, only 8 of the top 100 law firms in the country signed onto the brief. But I am proud to say the law firm my husband is a partner at, Arnold & Porter, was one of those 8 firms. It took courage for the law firms who did sign to stand up to the most powerful bully in the world, and we will see what the consequences are. But for now I know on a very personal level that those 500 firms, including Arnold & Porter, can sleep at night knowing they are on the right side of history.
