Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

Before we get started — you still have time to nominate some shows to go into the Foolish TV Tournament to determine which show I’ll blog this fall. Hit me up in the comments!

We have a Democratic Vice President nominee: Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota who helped shape the Harris campaign’s messaging against her opponents by calling them “weird.”

And speaking of Damon Lindelof: This is a good interview with Damon Lindelof and Tom Perotta about The Leftovers, and how the apocalyptic drama became prophetic.

You’re about to pay more for Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu.

Charles Barkley’s thought about it and is not leaving TNT Sports after all.

James Taylor, a Bachelorette contestant on Jojo’s season, was arrested in College Station in what sounds like a drunken bar incident.

General Hospital might be recasting Lulu Spencer, which is an interesting choice. Not that bringing Lulu back is interesting — they’ve been hinting at that for months now. But that they wouldn’t bring back one of the two original actresses who played her, especially since actress Emme Rylan has made it known she’s willing and available.

Tom Girardi’s criminal case begins in Los Angeles today.

Andy Cohen is taking Watch What Happens Live! to Miami for a week in November.

Here are your MTV VMA nominees.

Get better soon, Colin Jost!

Stay healthy, Daisy Ridley!

#MeToo

14 people were arrested for running a sex trafficking ring at Comic-Con, with 10 recovered victims, including a 16-year-old and sadly, I’m not shocked by any of this.

Videos of Francis Ford Coppola trying to kiss young female extras on the set of his film Megalopolis have emerged, along with an accusation that he got on a microphone and told the crew: “Sorry, if I come up to you and kiss you. Just know it’s solely for my pleasure.”

However, one of the extras in the videos, Rayna Menz, denies that he behaved inappropriately and felt blindsided by the Variety story above. But a DIFFERENT extra, Lauren Pagone, says that she did not appreciate Menz speaking on her behalf and found Coppola’s behavior shocking.

MrBeast co-host, Ava Kris Tyson, has stepped down from the popular YouTube channel after she was accused of grooming a minor, though she claims the allegations are false. Jimmy Donaldson, MrBeast himself, said that he was disgusted by Tyson’s behavior and removed her immediately. However, in the wake of all this, Donaldson himself has been accused of making racist remarks and creating unsafe filming conditions on his upcoming game show on Prime Video.

The Strictly Come Dancing scandal just keeps unfolding: After Amanda Abbington accused her (now fired) partner pro Giovanni Pernice of being abusive, and the BBC not taking it seriously even when she complained, it was revealed that another pro, Graziano Di Prima kicked his celebrity partner during rehearsals, and was fired from the series. And a third dancer is now under investigation. Now, judge Anton Du Beke has been accused of using a racist term with one of his celebrity partners when he was a pro on the show. And former staff claim that they “were subjected to sexist and sexualized comments, including intrusive questions about their sex life which made them feel “uncomfortable” and explicit sexual comments about the female dancers.” The BBC is terribly sorry about all of this.

And all this on top of another BBC headache: Former BBC newsreader Huw Edwards has been charged with and pled guilty to “three counts of making indecent images of children.” The young man at the center of this story was 17 at the time, and says that he felt groomed by Edwards.

The BBC admitted that it knew Edwards had been arrested in November, but kept him on the payroll through April when he resigned, insisting that they would have fired him had he been charged. However, other freelance on-air talent have written into their contracts that they are subject to immediate suspension should they be arrested, leading to some crying that Edwards was treated to a double standard.

The BBC has since scrubbed episodes of Doctor Who and Great British Menu that Edwards appeared in, but are going to have a harder time getting rid of him in the archives from state occasions.

Two more women have accused Neil Gaiman of sexual assault.

Irv Gotti, music producer who co-founded Murder Inc. Records, is being “sued by an ex-companion for alleged sexual assault and battery.”

Armie Hammer admits he’s branded someone, but insists that he’s not a cannibal, you guys. He also suggests that he and Kevin Spacey are smart bargains for producers right now. Ew, no.

Winston Nguyen, a Jeopardy! champion, has been arrested on child pornography charges.

This is me playing the world’s smallest violin.

Reality TV has a real parity issue: 8 out of 10 reality TV creators are men.

As Sharon Stone points out, more female filmmakers and producers is a good thing: “I think that now that women are writing, directing, producing, filming, and more and more a part of filmmaking, films are less about male-driven fantasies,” Stone said. “Actresses are less asked to portray the male fantasy and critics are less asked to tell us if we fulfilled the male fantasy or not. It’s more, ‘Are we fulfilling the human condition?’”
