HOWEVER. You people gave me a tie yesterday in one of the polls, and … I didn’t have a plan for the event of a tie. So we’re going to rerun this one poll right here and see if we can break the tie.

Yeah, The Goldbergs are going to kill off Murray ahead of the tenth season. And it sounds like no one in the family is going to be particularly sad about it. From an Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunner Alex Barnow:

This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that. We’re starting with optimism about [Erica’s] baby coming and looking forward to the future. It’s an opportunity for this interesting emotional basis for the way people are behaving.

So last week had a ton of Chris Rock news. First, he did a stand-up show in London on Saturday, August 27th where he addressed Will Smith’s apology by saying “fuck your hostage video.” He then added, “Yes that sh*t hurt. He played Ali. I can’t even play Floyd Mayweather,” which apparently he’s said in other shows.

Then, in Phoenix on Sunday, Rock said that The Oscars asked him to host this next year, and he turned them down. But then he went and compared himself going back to the Oscars as “returning to the scene of the crime” and compared it to asking Nicole Brown Simpson to return to the restaurant where she left her sunglasses the night she was murdered. This did not go over well.

Nicole Brown Simpson’s sister points out that not only was the joke distasteful, it doesn’t make sense?

Well, these stories are suddenly timely. ALRIGHT. SO. DON’T WORRY, DARLING. A few weeks ago, it was said that star Florence Pugh was not going to do any promotion for the Olivia Wilde-directed film because she was mad that Wilde had an affair with her co-star, Harry Styles during the filming, and Pugh is good friends with Wilde’s then-husband Jason Sudeikis. And everyone was like, “well, that seems a little strong, but OK.”

So then, Olivia Wilde gives this big interview to Variety, where she talks about her divorce from Sudeikis and his little stunt serving her papers at CinemaCon. She also discussed firing Shia LeBeouf from the Harry Styles role in Don’t Worry, Darling, claiming he violated her “no assholes” policy. Wilde described LeBeouf as having “combative energy” and that she felt she needed to protect Florence Pugh. 

BUT. THEN. LeBeouf decided to blow the whole thing up. He wrote an email to Wilde that he also made public, which included text messages and a personal video sent from Wilde to LeBeouf that challenges the narrative that she fired him. He claims he chose to leave the film over inadequate rehearsal time. But the most interesting part of the email comes in the video, in which Wilde is shown apparently trying to convince him to stay in the movie, saying:

“I feel like I’m not ready to give up on this yet, and I too am heartbroken, and I want to figure this out,” Wilde says in the video. “You know, I think this might be a bit of a wake-up call for Miss Flo, and I want to know if you’re open to giving this a shot with me, with us. If she really commits, if she really puts her mind and heart into it at this point and if you guys can make peace — and I respect your point of view, I respect hers — but if you guys can do it, what do you think? Is there hope? Will you let me know?”

I mean, I read Wilde’s comments to suggest that Pugh thought LeBeouf was being an asshole and wanted him fired, and that Wilde didn’t want him to quit? And maybe Pugh is irritated at watching Wilde go out there and frame herself as some sort of feminist hero to Pugh when Pugh knows the truth and THAT’S why she doesn’t want to do any promotion?

But in the end, Pugh did do some promotion, appearing at the Venice Film Festival premiere along with Olivia Wilde, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, and Nick Kroll. Things were a little bananas, what with Harry Styles describing the movie as “a movie” while Chris Pine died inside:

And Florence Pugh not attending the press conference for the movie because SHE IS NOT DOING ANY PROMOTION.

Everything about this is unhinged. I love it.

In decidedly less entertaining news, Tiffany Haddish and Aries Spears have been sued for grooming and molesting two young siblings, a 14-year-old girl and her 7-year-old brother, for some Funny or Die videos made 7 and 8 years ago. The details are gross and certainly not funny. Haddish has responded on Instagram, saying that she “deeply regret(s)” having participated in the video she was in.

The Dan Schneider stuff just keeps coming out and it’s all so gross. He had goo squirted on a 13-year-old Jamie Spears’ face to replicate a “money shot,” he put his female stars in age-inappropriate costumes, and when his stars themselves expressed worry about something in the show being sexualized, they were ignored by Nickelodeon.

Alexa Nikolas who costarred on Zoey 101, protested outside of Nickelodeon’s headquarters, claiming abuse at the hands of Schnieder and others.

One of the stories from the Dan Schneider piece above that I had not heard is that Amanda Bynes apparently lived with him and his wife for a period of time while she was trying to become emancipated from her parents. Bynes then went on to have all sorts of well-documented mental health issues, and went into a conservatorship like Britney Spears’. I shudder to think what happened to her when she lived with this monster.

This scandal in particular has people asking whether or not we should ban children from acting, and when coupled with the Tiffany Haddish/Aries Spears story above … it’s not difficult to see an argument for doing so. And not to spoil too much about the strange Nathan Fielder series The Rehearsal, but the question of what acting does to children’s mental and emotional health is explored in the finale episode. Let’s be honest: children are always going to be in the business. But maybe it’s time for a # MeToo-like reevaluation on how we can make it safer for them.

Win Butler of Arcade Fire claims that the women who are alleging sexual misconduct had consensual sex with him. He also is blaming his behavior on his wife’s miscarriage which is … a choice. In response, Feist left her tour with Arcade Fire. She also donated all profits from merchandise sales during the two shows she performed with Arcade Fire in Dublin before departing to Women’s Aid Dublin.

One of Armie Hammer’s accusers has blasted the House of Hammer documentary for exploiting her trauma.

The woman who says Horatio Sanz sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager has asked the court to add Jimmy Fallon, Tracy Morgan, and Lorne Michaels to her lawsuit for enabling Sanz.

George Foreman has been formally accused of raping two women in the 1970s in a lawsuit. 

Buffalo Bills Punter Matt Araiza was cut from the team after being accused of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl.

Devin Ratray, a Home Alone and Better Call Saul actor, has been accused of raping a woman in 2017.

Oh, and back to Shia LeBeouf real quick, he admitted to abusing FKA Twigs.

Mario Batali has settled two sexual assault lawsuits against him.

Harvey Weinstein has won the right to appeal his conviction for rape and sex crimes.

Michelle Branch’s domestic assault case has been dismissed.

The Nirvana baby’s child porn lawsuit has been tossed.

Scott Patterson felt objectified by a particular Gilmore Girls scene, and called it “disturbing.”

Singer Jason Aldean has been dropped by his publicity firm after his wife made some transphobic comments on social media.

As expected, Johnny Depp made an appearance at the MTV VMAs. Everybody involved with this is gross.

Lea Michele is blaming the backlash to her being cast in Funny Girl and a rumor that she can’t read (???!!) on misogyny.

The movie The Invitation was originally entitled The Bride, but that title didn’t test well with male audiences. I’M SHOCKED. SHOCKED!

  1. French cinema alert: A sweet little gem of a movie from 2021, Petite Maman, is now on hulu. It centers on an 8-year-old girl and features some parent-daughter bonding with a touch of magic realism. Highly recommended if you have 72 minutes to spare and maybe a tissue handy.
