‘Lost’: SEE YA IN ANOTHA LIFE, BRUTHA!

Nearly 14 years ago, I was invited by the Houston Chronicle‘s new television blog, Tubular, to write a weekly recap of the wildly popular show Lost, then beginning its third season. I landed the gig thanks to a friend who knew I was completely obsessed with the show, and the experience literally changed my life.

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the series finale of that weird, wonderful and for some, ultimately disappointing show. I’m not here to debate the finale’s merits (I liked it more than most, but I understand the complaints), but instead to mark the end of an important and transformative series by finally, FINALLY! adding my Tubular Lost posts to this site (with the Chronicle‘s permission, of course).

First, let me explain what this is not: this is not a formal rewatch of Lost. You are more than welcome to use it as a guide to your own rewatch — in fact, I hope you do! But for now, I’m not going to be able to join along in any comprehensive way. That said, please add your thoughts in the comments — I am excited to read and respond to them!

Now let me explain what it is: this is an enhanced version of my Tubular Lost blog. This time around, I am able to include screenshots to better make my points (which is helpful when describing a primarily visual medium), and gifs — THE GIFS! — and can fix broken links.  Hopefully, this is like the old blog, but vastly more visually stimulating and enlightening.

But here’s the thing: this is going to take longer than I expected. I came up with the idea to mark this anniversary with my Lost library a month ago when a dear friend, Nicki Ittner, reached out to me asking for links to the blog. “I have a month!” I thought to myself. “I should be able to clean up these old posts, make sure the links work, and have them all uploaded onto the site in about a week!” I IDIOTICALLY thought to myself.

So, remember how I mentioned I started the Lost blog 14 years ago? Yeah, 2006 is an eternity ago in internet time. Since then, Tubular moved platforms three times, and all the links I included in the posts — and there were A LOT of links in these posts — had vanished into the ether. It’s not that the links were broken, they weren’t there. This means I had to try to remember what I was making a reference to in posts that are now old enough to go to high school. Unfortunately, I don’t have a ticket for Ajira Airlines and can’t go back in time to see what the hell I was talking about and WAY TOO LONG STORY SHORT, this project is taking me a lot longer than I expected.

Season One should be up on the site by the end of this weekend (especially if you’re counting Monday as part of the weekend — it is a holiday, after all), and after that … I’ll post the episodes as they come along. It’s taking me about two weeks per season — and that’s while I am not doing anything else — so I’ll hopefully have this entire project done by the time we’re ready to celebrate the 16th anniversary of the show’s premiere in September.

There are few better shows to binge watch while we are in this current pandemic mess: it’s a series about isolation, imprisonment, a mysterious sickness, and being forced to play board games with people you both love and kinda want to murder. Binge away and then please come check out what I had to write about the episode you just watched!

That said, a word of caution for those of you new to the series: as I mentioned, I began by blogging Lost at season three. I went back and blogged the previous two seasons in between seasons three and four, and four and five. As a result, my season one and two posts are very spoiler-heavy for seasons three and four. If you hate spoilers, proceed with caution.

On the other hand, this series ended 10 years ago today, so you’re lucky if you haven’t already been spoiled thoroughly. I do have to admit that while I have been going back through these old posts, I have been finding things I want to add, now that we know all of the show’s big secrets. I am definitely entertaining the idea of another rewatch with some additional commentary … someday … but I am going to put that off until after I post all the enhanced original posts.
