Harvey Update: The rain has gone away — for us. However, the storm dipped back down into the Gulf, picked up some more water, and made its THIRD landfall to the east of us in Houston. In short, fuck you, Harvey. Fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you.
Here are some more groups and causes that could use your love:
- The areas being hit today have food banks, Food Bank of the Golden Crescent (Victoria) and Southeast Texas Food Bank (Beaumont) which could both use help.
- If you are a part of a national group or organization looking for a project, consider donating supplies to HISD to distribute to their students.
- Houston PetSet Disaster Relief is an umbrella organization of a number of local animal rescue groups and are working with Ed Emmett on rescue efforts.
- Society of St. Vincent de Paul Archdiocese will be helping local communities.
- Star of Hope is a local organization that works with the homeless community in Houston.
- The Transgender Foundation of America has established a Harvey fund for trans and inter-sex people, groups that are sometimes turned away from shelters.
- The Living Hope Wheelchair Association will take your money or your used wheelchair.
- GoFunderwear is raising money to provide underwear for women and girls.
- The Montrose Center will help members of the LGBTQ community who have been displaced by the storm.
- Muslims for Humanity is accepting donations for relief efforts.
- If you don’t want to just send money to a group, here’s The Texas Diaper Bank Disaster Relief’s Amazon Wishlist. Our shelters don’t need your used clothes, they need diapers, both for babies and adults.
- South Texas Human Rights Center work to keep immigrant families together, which will certainly need help in the aftermath.
- Texas Organizing Project works with marginalized communities who often fall through the cracks.
- And on a personal level, this t-shirt fundraiser was started by one of my son’s classmates. Her house is underwater, and she is raising funds for others. This is Houston.
Onto TV News
American Idol has canceled their Houston auditions. It’s understandable, but a shame they couldn’t just delay them and give our area an audition sometime later in the month.
Disney and its ABC station KTRK have donated $1 million for Harvey relief efforts. Thanks, Mickey!
Meanwhile, local restaurant ruiner/TV guy Tilman Fertitta put out this tone-deaf and horribly misspelled tweet this weekend. Groooooossssssss:
