President Pussy-Grabber had an idea for a TV show that would be like ‘Dynasty’ but cast with models. Sounds terrific.

If you are interested in politics and cable news, you need to read this a very long, very good piece in The New York Times Magazine about the strange, symbiotic relationship between Donald Trump and Jeff Zucker and CNN. Basically, Jeff Zucker created Apprentice Donald Trump who turned around and helped Zucker get the job at CNN which covered Candidate Donald Trump slavishly which helped create President Donald Trump only to have President Donald Trump feel that CNN and Zucker betrayed him by not giving him kind enough coverage so President Donald Trump called CNN “fake news” which only boosted CNN’s — and Zucker’s — relevancy.

Some other interesting bits from the piece include Trump’s idea for a scripted series featuring models:

When Trump wanted to create a scripted fictional show called “The Tower” — like “Dynasty,” only about a group of models who live in a Manhattan skyscraper — Zucker instructed his development team to buy the pitch and hire a writer, even though he never intended to put it on TV. (Even before there was a script, Trump had a casting demand: They had to hire real models, not actresses.)

The threat Zucker received from Trump during the campaign:

Zucker received an email from Trump, via his campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks: “Jeff — Too bad you (CNN) couldn’t be honest with how well I did in the debate. The dumbest thing I ever did was get you the job at CNN — you are the most disloyal person. Just remember, I always seem to find a way to get even. Best wishes, Donald J. Trump.”

How CNN has basically turned politics into a sport:

Zucker is a big sports fan and from the early days of the campaign had spoken at editorial meetings about wanting to incorporate elements of ESPN’s programming into CNN’s election coverage. “The idea that politics is sport is undeniable, and we understood that and approached it that way,” he told me. Toward that end, the network built “pregame” sets outside debate halls with excited crowds in the background and created a temporary rooftop studio for the final weeks of the campaign with sweeping views of the White House and the Washington Monument. An on-screen countdown clock ticked down the days (then hours) to Nov. 8. Trump, the trash-talking (and trash-Tweeting) underdog who inspired raw, powerful feelings among supporters and detractors alike, was the ideal subject for this narrative framework.

And a bit that I mentioned yesterday about how Trump wanted to give Fox News exclusive rights to the inauguration:

Shortly before Trump was sworn in, Zucker heard that he was considering giving Fox News exclusive rights to televise the inauguration and that Kushner was in the process of brokering a deal with Rupert Murdoch, whom Kushner once courted as a mentor. Zucker called Trump. “Bottom line is that I said, ‘This is crazy,’ ” Zucker recalls. “You’re just going to give your inaugural coverage to your base of support? It makes no sense.”

And over on Fox News this Bill O’Reilly thing is heating up

Nearly 50 advertisers have pulled their spots from The O’Reilly Factor, which is almost half of the 107 companies that have recently advertised there. Which is great! Except that ratings on The O’Reilly Factor have jumped 20% while people wait for O’Reilly to say something about the fact that he got caught harassing all those women. YOU GUYS, HE’S NOT GOING TO SAY ANYTHING ABOUT IT. And if he does? I PROMISE YOU’LL HEAR ABOUT IT SOMEWHERE ELSE LATER. You don’t have to watch his show. Please stop watching his show. And stop buying his book, for fuck’s sake.

And as for the advertisers who are pulling their buys from The O’Reilly Factor but not Fox News, what do you guys think you’re actually accomplishing? As former Obama speechwriters said, Fox News is a “garbage organization that protects sexual harassers.” Do you really want to be associated with them? No, I do not think you do.

Meanwhile, there is one person is delighting in this Bill O’Reilly story:

Late Night Takes

Stephen Colbert does not think Donald Trump is the best person to talk about this whole Bill O’Reilly situation.

Seth Meyers takes a closer look at Trump, Bill O’Reilly and State Media, I mean, Fox News.

And on a completely different topic, Full Frontal discusses safe guns and politicians — Democrats! — WHO ARE NOT HELPING.
