Looks like Tyler Sheridan’s new show, Marshals, is an enormous hit for CBS. It garnered the biggest audience for a broadcast series premiere in seven years — if you don’t count shows that premiered immediately after an NFL game.
But just to demonstrate how hard it is to define ratings these days, the reboot of Scrubs was also a big hit last week, with more viewers than the Marshals premiere — but over the course of five days.
I’m not going to lie, this back and forth between Bachelor stars and former couple DeAnna Pappas and Brad Womack is genuinely very sweet. Glad to see everyone grew up.
Jimmy Kimmel suggests that he host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this year: “And I want to address the president directly on this: Mr. President, please let me host this dinner. I’ve never asked you for anything before. Can you imagine? You, me, the commissioner of the F.C.C., all at a table together? Think of the ratings.”
Fans of The Dropout are real mad about it being on The Rookie, calling the show “copaganda.”
For the last time, NO, Cillian Murphy is not your new Voldemort. (Although that would have been some amazing casting.)
Someone much more familiar with the Bridgerton books makes a case for Eloise being the focus of season five. I still think they should drag it out another season, but these are all valid points.
The death of Deadliest Catch deckhand Todd Meadows is being investigated by the Coast Guard. It sounds as though his death was unfortunately caught on film for the show. Oh no.
THEY WON’T GET RID OF GAYLE KING THAT EASILY.
That said, there are reports that Bari Weiss is eyeing Sage Steele for CBS Mornings. Steele, you might remember, was fired by Disney for refusing to be vaccinated during Covid, so obviously, she’s on Weiss’ radar.
Another CBS News producer has resigned. HUH WHY?
Speaking of, I’m trying to not constantly bombard y’all with this Paramount/Netflix/Warner Bros. news. As such, I’ve saved a few important stories from the past few days:
- Paramount has already ponied up the $2.8 breakup fee to Netflix, so this is really happening.
- They are anticipating “thousands” of layoffs. Hey, James Cameron, remind me how this is a good thing?
- Ellison is claiming that the “majority of our synergy target comes from non-labor sources among the efficiencies we have identified” — meaning, there won’t be a bunch of layoffs. Sure, David.
- Paramount also has no plans to sell all the cable channels they just bought. Huh.
- One of the areas that could be in danger is real estate: it’s possible one of the two historic studio lots could be sold.
- They are planning to merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into one streaming service. OH CRAP, THEY’RE GOING TO RENAME IT AGAIN, AREN’T THEY? They’re claiming HBO will “operate with independence.” We’ll see.
- And is anyone else worried about how $24 billion of the funds to buy this mess will be coming from Saudi Arabia? Does anyone think they will be a completely silent partner or that they won’t apply some pressure on entities like CNN or HBO?
- In his attempt to sell Paramount’s buying Warner Bros. as a good thing to CNN employees, David Zaslav urged them to think about how cool it will be to work with CBS News. READ THE ROOM, ZASLAV.
- Meanwhile, CNN’s message to employees is “NO ONE PANIC!”
- Someone who should maybe panic: John Oliver.
“Yeah, not great news. In fact, if I may quote anyone who’s ever accidentally sat on their Roku remote: ‘Oh shit, I’m in Paramount now, how the fuck do I get out of this?’” —John Oliver, on news that Paramount is on track to become his new “business daddy.” pic.twitter.com/PZq68jjNne

- Less panicky, perhaps, but still a degree of panic: Bill Maher.
- Fox News is already anticipating CNN taking a turn to the right. BUT NO ONE PANIC!
- One weird little side note about this merger: former rivals HBO and Showtime will now be owned by the same company.
- There are still some speed bumps along the way: European regulators might delay the merger; Democrats are demanding answers from Pam Bondi regarding her meeting with Ted Sarandos; and California is rallying other blue states to probe the merger.
