Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

HI! FoolishWatcher is reporting from New York City this morning, where I am doing a little shoe-leather reporting. I spent the morning as an audience member of Live with Kelly and Mark! which happens to tape around the corner from where I am staying (although not for long — the studio moves in March). Fun fact about your friendly TV blogger: I am almost ALWAYS watching Live with Kelly and Mark! while writing these posts. I grew up watching All My Children — and in fact, I remember the episode when Kelly Ripa’s character, Haley Vaughan Chandler Cortlandt McIntyre Santos, arrived on the show — and I began watching Live with Regis and Kelly! when I was on maternity leave with my first son, born one month after her daughter Lola. I was THRILLED when they finally named Ripa’s husband and All My Children co-star Mark Consuelos as her co-host, a decision I thought they should have made back when Regis’ retirement was announced. I’m a fan.

A little bit about the experience of the taping: upon securing a ticket online one day before I arrived, I was instructed to be at the studio by 7:45 a.m. I was in the line outside by 7:35, and was easily one of the final 20 people to be in line, so keep that in mind if you want to attend one of these tapings: there are going to be a lot of people who show up before you if you arrive on time. I proceeded to stand outside for a full hour before they started allowing people into the studio and be seated. Once inside, we were given numbers for the giveaway. The gentleman next to me explained that he has been to about 50 tapings (!!!!) and never won, but that the one time he brought his boyfriend, the boyfriend won a $500 air fryer.

I did not win. No iRobot vacuum for me, alas.

When the taping began, this was my view for the host chat:

LOL.

During the host chat, they discussed the news that broke yesterday that Mark Consuelos has joined the cast of Scream 7, explaining his absence from Live with Kelly and Mark last week. There was a LOT of speculation about whether or not he will be GhostFace, which he neither confirmed nor denied.

I will note that the camera was moved out of the way (for the most part) during the interviews with Jack Quaid and Lacy Chabert, and that I completely forgot about Chabert being Bianca Montgomery on All My Children until this interview. Shows what kind of fan I was.

In between segments, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos were very friendly, chatted with the audience and made themselves available for selfies. And if you saw the episode, you know that Mark teased Kelly about needing more protein now that she’s “getting older.” Once the cameras were off, he became very affectionate with her, leading her to joke with the audience that he’s just looking to “get laid,” after having insulted her.

Aside from the long wait in the cold (seriously, get to the line early if you can — those who get there first are allowed to stand in the lobby), it was a delightful way to spend a couple of hours if you find yourself in the city. (Oh, and Kelly, if you [ha] or one of your interns are reading this: you and Chewy are in my heart. I lost my dog a month ago, and I’m still not OK, but your openness about your struggle with your sweet dog made me feel a little less alone. I hope Chewy continues to live a long and happy life with you guys.)

George R.R. Martin wants y’all to temper your expectations for A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight: “It’s as faithful as adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for (and you all know how incredibly [sic] reasonable I am on that particular subject). Viewers who are looking for action, and more action, and only action… well, this one may not satisfy you. There’s a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers… this is a character piece, and its focus is on duty and honor, on chivalry and all it means.”

Great, now go FINISH THE DAMN BOOK, GEORGE.

LOL, as the wife of a lawyer, I find the fact that Suits‘ star Gabriel Macht apologizes to fans who tell him that he inspired them to go to law school absolutely hilarious: “There are so many kids that have gone to law school because of the show — because they think it’s fast-moving, there’s family, there’s loyalties, it’s cool, it’s slick. People are witty. There’s a lot of drama, all this kind of stuff,” Macht explained. “When people come up to me, and they’re like, ‘I went to law school because of you,’ I always apologize profusely.”

As predicted, MSNBC viewers returned following the inauguration. We just needed a minute to collect ourselves and enjoy the holidays before the shitstorm began. (That said, they haven’t returned to pre-election levels, and Fox News is out here running the tables.)

Prime Video has signed a multi-year deal for Lionsgate movies following Starz’s first-run window.

The Matthew Perry Foundation has set up an addiction medicine foundation at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Sending good thoughts to Matt Pinfield, and hope he recovers soon.

  1. Great column today. Loved AMC for over 20 years. Watched Regis and Kelly often but never watched much after Regis retired.
