Quick Announcement

Funny story: I planned on making this announcement last Monday, but then: Hurricane Beryl. So then I planned on mentioning it last Tuesday, but then: no one in Houston had power. So THEN I planned on making it yesterday, but then: Saturday. So I’m just going to go ahead and mention it NOW because if I wait any longer WHO EVEN KNOWS WHAT WILL GO DOWN.

RIGHT. SO.

Remember a couple of years ago when I set up the TV Foolishness Tournament, in which I allowed y’all to pick what show I would recap via a poll bracket, March Madness-style? Well, now that TV isn’t being interrupted by multiple strikes, we’re doing it again.

Like last time, there will be four categories:

  1. New Fall Shows
  2. Classic Shows I Should Have Recapped
  3. Shows I Started Recapping But Didn’t Finish
  4. Readers’ Choice

I will announce the shows in those first three categories soon. In the meantime, I need you to start nominating shows for that fourth category. I will note that I have moved two previous “Readers’ Choice” series into the “Classics” category: Evil and The Boys, so no need to nominate them.

From the last time I did this:

Some things to consider:

1. It has to be a show that is available on a streaming service. Don’t worry about me: I have access to all of the services. But if your show is an old series that is not available anywhere because of some weird licensing issue, I’m not going to be able to recap it. When you suggest a show, I will of course do my own research to make sure it is available somewhere, but you might want to do your own research before suggesting something, just to avoid disappointment.

2. You might want to keep in mind how I write about television. I tend to write in one of two voices: super snarky or super analytical. So for a blog that will be fun to read, I would lean towards a show that is either mockable or one that I can really dig into and create something informative out of it. What I’m saying is that a procedural doesn’t really work great here … but there are always exceptions (see Fringe, for instance). And comedies are tough to recap, because making something that’s already funny somehow funnier is not an easy task. These are just suggestions, of course, you can pick whatever you want, and we’ll let the crowd choose.

Alright, so nominate away in the comments, and I’ll be back later in the month with the full list of shows in contention. VOTE EARLY. VOTE OFTEN.

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

Four-time Grammy nominee, Ingrid Aldress, sang the National Anthem at the MLB Home Run Derby last night, and as one commentator said, “It’s been a rough week for ears.”

It was so bad … HOW BAD WAS IT … it was so bad that Andress is going to rehab. No, that’s not a joke.

The Emmy nominations come out tomorrow morning at 11:30/10:30 a.m. You can stream it on the Emmys website

It’s Prime Day over on Amazon, and they are offering some big discounts on streaming add-ons — for 60 days.

Paramount is launching two new FAST channels featuring Tyler Perry material: BET Tyler Perry Drama and BET Tyler Perry Comedy.

Get better soon, Kathie Lee Gifford!

Love is dead. And maybe Christina should stop making shows with her husbands? Just a thought.

How late-night responded to the assassination attempt on Former President Roe Revoker:

Stephen Colbert grieved for his country and called political violence pointless: “Not only is violence evil, it is useless. As I quoted [science fiction writer Isaac Asimov] when Rep. Steve Scalise was shot, ‘Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent.’ Violence, or even calls for violence, invalidate any ideas.”

Seth Meyers called for a recommitment to politics and refused to be silenced: “Accurately describing the dangers of autocracy, and warning against attempts to dismantle our democracy, have nothing to do with political violence. Speaking plainly about the specter of authoritarianism is not only our democratic right; it’s our civic duty. We must all continue to do it. That’s what we will continue to do here on this show.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! guest host Anthony Anderson called for the country to “take a step back from the hatred and vitriol in our politics.”

And Jimmy Fallon didn’t say anything about it at all.

The Daily Show was on hiatus last night, after the series scrapped its plans to broadcast from the RNC this week. Jon Stewart will return to The Daily Show tonight.

Joe Scarborough was pissed that MSNBC pulled Morning Joe yesterday morning in the wake of the assassination attempt:

“We were told in no uncertain terms on Sunday evening, that there was gonna be one news feed across all NBC News channels yesterday… that we were gonna stay, as a network, in breaking news mode,” Scarborough explained on Tuesday’s edition of Morning Joe. “That did not happen. We don’t know why that didn’t happen. Our team was not given a good answer as to why that didn’t happen.”

He continued, “We were also told it was gonna happen throughout the day. And I guess, after there was such strong blowback about yesterday morning, I guess they changed their plans. We’ve talked about it off the air, and we’ll talk about it on the air because we talk about everything on the air.”

“We were very surprised; we were very disappointed. And if we’d have known there wasn’t gonna be the one news feed from NBC News, we would have obviously been in yesterday morning,”

Jack Black canceled the Tenacious D tour after Kyle Gass made an improvised joke about wishing future assassination attempts on Former President Project 2025 being successful in the middle of a concert in Australia. Oof.

Tim Robbins doesn’t want to hear your conspiracy theories about the assassination attempt and please do not try to connect it to his film Bob Roberts. I have to admit, I searched for Bob Roberts on streaming following the events on Saturday. It’s not available to stream anywhere, and honestly, for everyone’s sanity, that might just be for the best.

Oh, and Former President Hang Mike Pence chose his new Vice Presidential running-mate: Ohio Senator J.D. Vance. This is who J.D. Vance is:

#MeToo

Former Vibe editor-in-chief Danyel Smith accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of threatening to see her “dead in the trunk of a car” if she didn’t let him see mockups of a magazine cover.

On Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast, Keri Russell discussed being fired from the All-New Mickey Mouse Club at 17 because they looked to be potentially sexually active, while boys were kept on the show until they were 19.

Was there a cutoff age where like, after you turned 17, you can no longer be on it?” Ferguson asked Russell, who appeared on the show between the ages of 15 and 17 in the early 1990s.

“Yeah, it’s usually girls who look like they were sexually active, which probably I was one of the first,” Russell said, joking, “They’re like, ‘She’s out. Oh, she is out.'” Meanwhile, “The boys stayed till they were 19,” she said. “I was like, ‘By the way, I had sex with that person, so I know that they’ve had sex.’ For real.”

“You know, girls and sexuality,” Russell added. “And by the way, me, I [had] like a 12-year-old boy body. There’s nothing really sexy about me, but I think that was what [made Disney] nervous. Pregnant Mouseketeers aren’t on the roster.”

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. “apologized” to one of the women who accused him of sexually assaulting her, though he claims he doesn’t remember it. And when asked if there were more women who might come forward, his answer was “We’ll see.”

Tampa Bay Rays star shortstop Wander Franco has been charged with sexual abuse and exploitation of a minor.

Former NFL star Adrian Wilson has been charged with assault and disorderly conduct as related to a domestic violence incident.

Nomi Abadi is suing Danny Elfman for defamation after he called her a liar for saying that he served her a particularly horrific “martini.”

Armie Hammer can’t get a job in The Cayman Islands after that whole weird “cannibal” situation. Smallest violin and all that.

The Strictly Come Dancing guy KICKED his celebrity dancing partner?! LOL, WHAT?

And now Strictly Come Dancing rehearsals will be overseen by production staff to prevent the DANCING PARTNERS from KICKING THE DANCERS.

  1. Off the top of my head, I would very much like to read your thoughts on AMC’s Anne Rice offerings – Interview With the Vampire and Mayfair Witches.

I need to add AMC+ to something and catch up on season 2 of Interview

    1. Hold off on getting that AMC+ subscription: news just broke that AMC has signed a deal that will bring a number of series, including Interview and Mayfair Witches, to Netflix next month. Cheers!

  2. I’m trying to figure out if all procedurals are problematic to recap, or just the ones that are episodic. Some of my favorite recent shows would probably be classed as procedurals with a season-long arc: Justified: City Primeval; Fargo; True Detective: Night Country. And my favorite could very nearly be called a comedy procedural (well, not really): the excellent Slow Horses on Apple TV+. Use your discretion.

Beyond that, I suggest A Murder at the End of the World; The Umbrella Academy; and The Magicians.

    1. Just for clarification, what I’m considering a procedural is something with a much more traditional episodic, crime-of-the-week format like Law & Order; NCIS; The Equalizer. I will happily add the above to my list.
