How’s everyone holding up after this past weekend? By the skin of your teeth? Me too.

I don’t even know where to begin with the events of this weekend. As if the loss of three beloved celebrities wasn’t enough, we then had an assassination attempt on Former President Violent Rhetoric; an assassination attempt that left one innocent man dead, two others critically injured, and turned an already cult-like base rabid with anger.

First and foremost, let me say that I am absolutely and wholeheartedly grateful the assassin’s bullet missed Former President Great Leader. We still don’t know what the failed assassin’s motivation was, but we can — we should — all agree that political violence is counterproductive and only leads to more violence. There is absolutely no place for it in a functioning democracy.

And yet. The right is out here screaming that this assassination attempt is all the Democrats’/Biden’s/The Left’s fault because of the “dangerous rhetoric” they have used about Former President January 6th. And by “dangerous rhetoric” they mean “pointing out that he has previously attempted to violently overthrow an election and has refused to promise to accept election results in the future; has aligned himself with a democracy-threatening plan of action that he intends to install on day one; and has been emboldened by a tainted Supreme Court who has given him king-like powers in the event that he wins the Presidency in November.”

There is only one side of the political spectrum — and one former President — that has consistently trafficked in violent rhetoric and encouraged political violence, and one side that has acted on those calls to violence. It’s the side who called for shooting protestors in the legs; the side who turned the brutal hammer attack of an 82-year-old man into a running joke; the side that suggested that the “Second Amendment People” could do something to stop Hillary Clinton from picking judges; the side that encouraged the police to be violent with people they are arresting; the side that suggested that immigrants be stopped by shooting them in the legs or with alligators; the side who posts photos of his opponent tied up in the back of a pickup truck; the side that encouraged followers to rough up protestors at their rallies, that cheered on a teenager who shot and killed protestors, and that believes people should be able to run over protestors with impunity; the side who literally says OUT LOUD, “some people need killing”; the side who threatens that blood will be spilled if they don’t get their way; the side whose followers attempted to run a Vice Presidential candidate’s bus off the road; the side who claims that there will be a “bloodbath” if they won’t win; the side who threatened election workers, FBI agents, district attorneys, special counsel lawyers, judges, judges’ families, and juries; the side who instigated a violent attack on our Capitol and encouraged their followers to threaten the Speaker of the House and their own Vice President.

Being shot at does not absolve him of any of that. Being shot at doesn’t turn him into a good person or a good President.

But more importantly, pointing all of this out is not engaging in “violent rhetoric.” It is not demonizing the other side. It is not contributing to the entrenching of the divisions between us. It’s telling the truth as we edge towards yet another “most important election of our lives.”

It’s going to be a noisy week with the Republican National Convention going in full swing and with MAGAites fired-up and emotional over the events of this weekend. (And the decision by the biased judge in Florida to dismiss the confidential documents case is not helping my heartburn right about now.)

But the mission remains the same: remember what the stakes are, fight authoritarianism, and keep this man away from ever occupying the White House again through the ballot box. Stay focused, don’t fall silent, and don’t despair.

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

Morning Joe was pulled from MSNBC this morning in order to continue broadcasting live coverage of the assassination attempt (even though nothing new had happened). CNN reported that it was to prevent any of their guests from saying something inappropriate regarding the shooting. Viewers were pissed.

The Daily Show has also pulled plans to broadcast from the Republican National Convention following the assassination attempt because ~gestures generally at everything~.

The Daily Show Cancels Mon Show and Won’t Travel to RNC Due to ‘Evolving Situation in Milwaukee’

Even Jordan Klepper isn’t going to the RNC, which, again, is probably for the best for his own safety.

The Television Critics Association had its awards this weekend, and let’s just say that it’s going to be a big year for Shōgun at the Emmys.

The involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin involving the fatal shooting of Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust was thrown out by the judge after he found that the prosecutors did not turn over evidence to the defense.

The Teamsters say that they are far apart from the studios in their negotiations ahead of the July 31 expiration date. WE CAN NOT DO ANOTHER STRIKE, YOU GUYS.

Mike Colter (David on Evil) is threatening that he, Katja Herbers, and Aasif Mandvi will make a podcast if we don’t all demand more seasons of the wicked little series.

Reba McEntire will sing in her new series, Happy’s Place, and she’ll sing the theme song.
