IT’S BEEN A REALLY SHITTY WEEK SO HERE ARE SOME BELUGA WHALES.

Look, y’all, it’s been a shitastic week, what with a bigoted travel ban that targets a religion being upheld by the Supreme Court, Justice Anthony Kennedy announcing his retirement from said Court, giving Donald Jucking Trump a second court appointee which will leave the Supreme Court a conservative nightmare for a generation — DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE REPUBLICANS HAVE ONLY WON THE PRESIDENTIAL POPULAR VOTE ONE TIME SINCE 1988 — (and don’t even get me started on the fact that Justice Kennedy’s son literally gave Trump a BILLION DOLLAR LOAN WHAT), the number of migrant children being detained by the government actually going UP since last week, and then having it all capped off with a mass shooting at a newspaper? I mean, give me a fucking break already, Universe.

And about that shooting at the Capital Gazette,: we now know this morning that it was a man who had been long aggrieved with the newspaper after they ran a column about how he stalked, threatened and harassed a woman, a crime for which he was convicted. He tried to sue the newspaper for defamation, but lost, and subsequently turned his harassment on the paper itself. So once again we have a mass murderer who turns out to be a misogynistic man who had ready and legal access to a gun and attempted to regain some sense of power, of control, of his own masculinity by killing others. We can talk about the need for reasonable gun control laws (and the insanity that we allow a tiny minority of gun humpers to prevent us from passing even the smallest and sanest of gun measures), but we also need to talk about our society, our culture and the misogyny that infects it. Toxic masculinity is real, you guys, and we can not continue talking about what to do to stop these mass shootings without discussing the poison that is circulating within our cultural veins.

That all said, we also can’t pretend that this shooting at a newspaper happened in some sort of political vacuum where the fact that the President of the United States repeatedly calls the free press the “enemy of the people” doesn’t have some kind of effect. I am not saying that Jarrod Ramos decided to kill five journalists and wound twenty-five more yesterday because the Inciter-in-Chief repeated his vile anti-free-press, anti-First-Amendment business in multiple rallies this week. I am not inside Ramos’ brain, and I can’t know that Trump’s recent performances were the things that sent Ramos over the edge. But when the President of the United States, members of his party, an entire news network and dark corner of the internet continue to scream that the press and media they disagree with are dangerous liars who are trying to destroy this country, inevitably there will be consequences in a nation that is filled with guns and crazy people looking for someone to blame for what has gone wrong in their lives.

Words and rhetoric, they have power.

Keep the friends and families of Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Wendi Winters, and Rebecca Smith, and the entire staff of the Capital Gazette in your thoughts this weekend. And keep journalists, those brave women and men who continue to fight to uphold the First Amendment in these difficult times in your thoughts as well. They are heroes.

So to say goodbye to this week that has been filled to the brim with complete and utter fuckery: I give you beluga whales. Let’s look at some beluga whales.

I was at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium last week where I became enamored with this beluga who was desperate to get her trainers’ attention (and probably some fish, please):

WOULD YOU PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO BELUGA WHALE, SHE HAS MANY IMPORTANT THINGS TO SAY

Here is a sad beluga with a (hilariously) defective blowhole:

This lucky man got to sing with some wild belugas:

And this is just a classic:

Thank you, beluga whales. TV news will resume next week after I spend this weekend drinking my fury away.
