ABC agrees they need to do a better job casting The Bachelor:

“The ‘Bachelor’ universe continues to be really important to us,” Erwich told TheWrap. “The ‘Bachelor’ installments are no different than any other show — you have to have the right cast and the right people in front of the camera who have an amazing story to tell, but also who are willing to share their story and to and are willing to reveal themselves.”

“We’re only going to roll these out as they come together and meet the bar of excellence that the tradition of the show has set,” Erwich continued.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, ABC head Craig Erwich reveals that they haven’t replaced The Bachelor and The Bachelorette‘s showrunner(s) yet, and once again emphasized that casting is important:

The Bachelor is no different than any other show. You have to have the exact right casting. You have to have the exact right people. We’re taking tremendous care with a very singular and beloved franchise, and we’ll continue to roll those out as they’re ready.

The Bachelor has not been renewed yet — which is a shocking development this late into the year (though I suspect it will happen once they land on a showrunner). Combined with The Bachelorette being put “on pause,” there are clearly some issues ABC seems to be finally addressing, both in the casting and in terms of leadership of the franchise as a whole. Personally, I think that these are problems that can’t be fixed without fundamentally changing the show and its very conventional philosophies about heterosexual relationships and women in general. But then again, no one asked me.

Sarah Sherman addresses that SNL impersonation of Aimee Lou Wood that caused such a stir: “I was excited to play her because she’s so iconic, her character is so iconic, and I fucking obviously never meant to hurt anyone’s feelings. Never in a million years did I get into comedy to make anyone upset. I feel terrible that anyone would feel bad.”

ESPN is launching a new streaming service featuring all of the ESPN networks and programming on ABC called … “ESPN.” It will cost you $29.99 a month.

CNN will also launch a new streaming service this fall, though the only details we know are that it will be “less flashy” than the previous CNN+.

The Sean Combs trial began this week.

Michael Pitt was arrested on charges of sexual abuse in Brooklyn. He was charged with “two counts of first-degree sexual abuse, counts of criminal sexual acts in the first and third degree, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of attempted assault and one count of strangulation in the second degree,” over four separate incidents between 2020 and 2021.

Smokey Robinson has been accused of “sexual battery, assault, fostering a hostile work environment, false imprisonment and gender violence” in a lawsuit brought by four former female employees. He has denied the allegations.

Gerard Depardieu was found guilty of sexual assault in France, and given an 18-month suspended sentence.  It is considered a landmark #MeToo case in France, as the movement took considerably longer to gain traction than here in the States. Two female crew members on the set of The Green Shutters accused him of groping them and saying inappropriate things, and a number of other women who did not bring charges testified to similar behavior but the actor claims “his actions had been misinterpreted.” Sir.

Oh, how surprising: Sean Penn would work with Woody Allen again, “in a heartbeat.”

Justin Baldoni is dragging Taylor Swift into this mess against Blake Lively. That seems like … a bad idea. Of course, his lawyer is full of bad ideas, like suggesting that Lively’s deposition be held at Madison Square Garden with ticket sales going to domestic abuse organizations. Yeah, that’s not how depositions work?

Ariel Winter opened up about being body-shamed and criticized as a young teen. And Carnie Wilson recalled being humiliated by a record executive by an “unacceptable” comment about her weight.

Kudos to John Oliver and Seth Meyers for their jokes this week. Well played, gentlemen.
