Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News
I know that the fact that I feel like I have to address what happened in the second episode of a season of television is, in a way, a spoiler in and of itself, but we need to talk about that second episode of The Last of Us. I hope I’ve waited long enough for everyone who does watch to have caught Sunday’s episode, but if not, scroll until you reach the end of the bullet points, and get to the story about The Conners. Cool?
- First, let’s be clear why this happened when it did: so that the gamers wouldn’t spoil it for everyone else. I had spoiled myself when the first season was airing, and I read up on the rest of the story, but I did NOT expect it to happen in the second episode.
- Entertainment Weekly has a lovely long-form piece on filming this episode that is worth your time. “Pedro and Bella are extraordinarily close. They worked hand in glove, they care deeply about each other. If you’re going to pretend to be in that moment, it’s probably a simple thing, but this isn’t pretend. I can tell you just from being in that room, it’s happening: The pain that [Ellie’s] feeling there and then that rage… That is not calculated or synthetic. It was hard to feel like we were breaking something that we had all spent so much time very carefully building and making work.”
- Pascal says this death is in competition with his on Game of Thrones. As a fan of both shows, this one was more shocking in that it happened; that one was more shocking in HOW it happened.
- The director of this episode also directed the “Connor’s Wedding” episode of Succession that killed off Logan Roy. “Craig Mazin joked of Mylod, ‘When he shows up, it’s like the undertaker.’”
- “I cried, actually sobbed my little heart out. It was the first time I ever cried from reading a piece of writing.”
- Here are 10 other character deaths that shocked the world. I have to argue with the Buffy choice, though. Her death wasn’t NEARLY as shocking as Joyce’s.

Unrelated to The Last of Us: Pedro Pascal is a fucking mensch.
The Conners ended on a fourth-wall-breaking note last night. It wasn’t scripted, but it felt right.
“The couch is always intentional.”
Somehow, I don’t think a Letterman/Leno summit will be happening any time soon. Or an O’Brien/Leno summit for that matter.
Camille Razat says goodbye to Emily in Paris:
I missed the part where Bachelor in Paradise is moving to Costa Rica this season.
Pajiba handicaps the five Saturday Night Live cast members most likely to leave at the end of this season. I will miss Gardner and Day, but it’s probably time. As for Jost and Che — check out Castings below, I have a theory.
First of all, Whoopi Goldberg IS a mother, she talks about it all the time, but second of all, WOW.
Uh-oh, the lesbian former talk show hosts are fighting. Sorta.
Uh-oh, the propaganda network and their favorite dictator are fighting.
