Welcome to the newest iteration of The Bachelor: The Grandpa Bachelor The Golden Bachelor. Gerry Turner is our first septuagenarian widower Bachelor, looking for a new love late in life, after having been in a loving marriage for 43 years. He is not some flighty twenty- or thirty-something who doesn’t fully appreciate the gravity of marriage, and neither are his contestants. Every woman competing on this series, whom you will meet below, is between 60 and 75 years old. Most of these women have been married before, have children, grandchildren, and careers. They have lived full lives and continue to seek out more.
And that’s why, for a change, I’m not here to make fun of them (much).
As we usually do on the eve of a new season of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, I will introduce you to Gerry’s contestants via their pictures and their brief bios. But instead of mocking them or looking for red flags, we’re going to try to determine on the very little information we have about them, whether or not they will be a good match for Gerry and his retired lake lifestyle.
So, before we can make those judgments, let’s meet our Grandpa Bachelor:
Gerry

A retired restaurateur and doting father and grandfather, Gerry [GAIR-ee] Turner lives in his dream house on a beautiful lake in Indiana. He’s often busy hosting barbecues, playing pickleball, cheering on his favorite Chicago sports teams, four-wheeling and spending time with friends and family at restaurants and local haunts.
Always a romantic, Turner married his high school sweetheart, Toni, in 1974. Together, they lived a full and happy life with their two daughters, Angie and Jenny, and later two granddaughters, Charlee and Payton. Sadly, after 43 years together, Toni suddenly fell ill and passed away in 2017.
Six years after Toni’s passing and with the support of his family, Turner is ready to put himself out there and find a love that will stand the test of time in his golden years.
Let me get this out of the way first: THAT IS NOT HOW YOU PRONOUNCE “GERRY.” This is like when you try to tell me “gif” is pronounced “jif.” Absolutely not and I will not have it. His name is Gerry — pronounced “Jerry,” and I will not be told otherwise.
That out of the way, I included Gerry’s bio here because it’s important to remember that this is a 71-year-old man. My father is about to turn 71 years old, and what I know about men this age is that they are set in their ways. Meaning, this man isn’t going to pick up and move away from his family and his retirement home to be with you. It’s unlikely he’s going to take up some new adventurous hobby that you like. You are going to have to fit into his life. And I know that’s not very feminist or forward-thinking of me, and no offense to this particular man, but 71-year-old men are not exactly very feminist or forward-thinking.
My point is, the Bachelor series is inherently a power imbalance: there are 22 women, there is only one Gerry. He’s going to be looking for someone to fit into his life, not the other way around. So it’s important to look at what he cares about: his family, his home, cheering on local teams, going to local restaurants, hosting barbecues with his friends, and the most exciting thing he appears to do is ride four-wheelers. Just keep all that in mind as you read over these women’s bios and try to figure out if they will be able to comfortably fit into his life.

Anna is a woman of the world. She has traveled to over 20 countries but is still looking for her travel partner for life. Anna has three daughters, and loves hiking and skiing with them. The adventurous matriarch is looking for a kind, confident, sensitive and emotionally intelligent man with whom to share her life. When Anna isn’t spending time with her family, she loves foraging for mushrooms, and learning about new herbs and plants. She also loves to cook and is ready to prepare a gourmet dish for our Golden Bachelor. Gerry, I hope you’re hungry for love and a delicious meal!

Someone should probably let Grandpa Bachelor know that Anna is a straight-up witch. Not that I’m judging! Once I reached a certain age, I fully embraced the witchy lifestyle myself, so more power to her. (Pun fully intended.)
As for her compatibility with Gerry, she’s from someplace up north, which is a positive — no one will be asking her to leave Florida to go live on a lake that freezes over half the year.

April is ready to ride off into the sunset with our Golden Bachelor. It’s easy to see what makes April a great catch with her zest for life, fun personality and extremely close family. She talks to them daily and makes sure to exchange “I love yous” every time they chat. Dating since losing her partner has been difficult for her, so April is looking forward to the opportunity of a lifetime to look for love with the Golden Bachelor. When she’s not spending time with her kids and grandkids, April loves dancing to Taylor Swift, watching “Bridgerton” and playing with her two dogs. April also isn’t afraid of thrill seeking and loves a good roller coaster. April and Gerry, buckle up because this is going to be the ride of your lives!

April is going to be a crier, I can feel it. Also the nickname “Presh” is just … it feels high-maintenance. Gerry doesn’t seem like a high-maintenance kind of guy. Also, while it’s a positive that it sounds like she doesn’t live near her kids, she does live in Florida. Will she be willing to move to someplace that has lake winters? Maybe they can split their time?

Christina is a sweet soul who’s ready to find love. She says she’s the happiest she’s ever been and is hoping to find someone with whom to share her golden years. Christina calls this chapter of life her “go-go” years, not the “slow-go” years, so hopefully Gerry can keep up! Christina is extremely proud of her career, and while she’s retired now, working her way up the corporate ladder without a college degree is still one of her biggest accomplishments. Christina loves playing pickleball, listening to Paul McCartney, and horseback riding. She also isn’t afraid of adventure and has plans to go skydiving (for a second time) with her oldest grandson. Wheels up, our hearts are ready for takeoff!

- Christina’s first concert ever was The Beatles in 1964.
- Christina loves a good dude ranch.
- Christina prefers to drive stick shift.
This is the first time pickleball is mentioned. It will not be the last. Also, Christina sounds like a good time, but also potentially exhausting.

Edith is a hopeless romantic looking for a partner with whom to share all the joys of life. Family is everything for Edith, and there’s nothing she loves more than spending time with her kids and grandkids. Edith works as a realtor and is extremely proud of opening her own business later in life. She says, “It’s never too late to do whatever you want to do!” When she’s not working or hanging with family, Edith loves golfing, salsa dancing and traveling. On the weekends, Edith loves making a big breakfast to eat in her garden and is looking for a man to join her. She hates dating apps so Edith is looking forward to this exciting opportunity to meet our Golden Bachelor. We can’t wait to see if she and Gerry hit it off!

Ellen is the full package and is ready for love. This retired teacher’s smile lights up a room, and she wears her heart on her sleeve. Ellen is compassionate, intelligent, and has a great sense of humor. She’s extremely close with her two sons and loves playing pickleball, golf and card games with them. In her free time, Ellen enjoys watching television, reading the newspaper, and playing bocce ball with her girlfriends. She hopes to remain healthy and active for her entire life, and hopes to grow old with the man of her dreams. Will our Golden Bachelor be that person? Only time will tell!

Faith is much more than meets the eye. Not only is she beautiful, but she’s also charismatic, adaptable, and looks for the positive in every situation. Faith has two sons and four grandkids that she loves more than anything in this world. She’s also a woman of many talents, which she continues to do professionally – like radio hosting, teaching and singing. Faith is a fun thrill-seeker and has checked many goals off her bucket list like diving with sharks, riding a motorcycle, and getting a tattoo, but she’s still looking for someone with whom to enjoy the thrills of life. Faith is truly hoping that Gerry is her perfect adventure partner!

First of all, there sure are a lot of shark divers in this group. Which I suppose I understand: you have to have a certain sense of adventure to go on a dating show in your 60s. But second, Faith’s hatred of inconsistent technology is specific, hilarious, and relatable.
I would need more information on where her children and grandchildren are currently living before I can make a real call on her — if they are in Washington State, too, it’s probably a no-go. However, if they already live far from her and she’s used to not seeing them a couple times a week, it might be fine.

Giving back to her community is of utmost importance to Jeanie, and she does anything possible to help people and animals. She looks up to others like Oprah, Dolly Parton and Princess Diana who are also known for their philanthropic work. Jeanie is extremely active and loves taking Zumba classes and walking dogs. She considers herself to be very sentimental and likes to keep little memories from dates, like fortune cookie fortunes. Joan is proud of herself for starting a new career in this chapter of life and for how resilient she’s been through many unexpected life changes. When she’s not working, Joan loves listening to Elton John, hanging with her dog, and cooking a delicious meal. Joan describes herself as a loving mother and a hard worker who would love to find someone with whom to enjoy life. Joan sounds like a good time with the right priorities: wine, food, Elton John. It’s a good sign she likes a beach since Gerry lives in a lake house. But that said, it’s a little problematic — for a potential relationship with this particular man, not for Joan herself, let me make that clear — that so much of her identity and pride is in rebuilding a career after her husband died. Will she be willing to walk away from that for some guy she met on a TV show?

Look. Sandra sounds great. But she better hope that Gerry is cruise people, because it’s a binary thing: you either are cruise people or you’re not, and will never work out between the two.
Susan

Susan is quite the catch – she’s loyal, compassionate, has a longtime career as a hair and makeup artist; and for the cherry on top, she’s also a great golfer. When Susan isn’t on the golf course or working at the salon, she loves spending time with her kids and grandkids at the beach. She also enjoys going to concerts, with two of her all-time favorite shows being The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. Susan knows what she’s looking for in a man and hopes Gerry is athletic, funny and honest. Theresa sounds fine. She sounds perfectly nice. Again, I need to know more about where these children and grandchildren are. If they are anywhere but New Jersey, there’s no problem here. But if she currently lives near them …

Renee lives in Chicago and loves walking around Lake Mendota. Um … Lake Mendota is in Madison, Wisconsin. Inconsistent.
There appears to be a very small — I wouldn’t even call it a lake — “Lake Mendota” in Illinois about two hours outside of Chicago. I’m not sure if this is the one she’s talking about, it’s more of a pond than a lake, but it is one hour closer to Chicago than the Lake Mendota in Wisconsin. Who even knows.
