These TV folks have their own not great experiences with that missing sub

Jenny is a good girl:

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

As we wait for an update on this submarine situation, a few stories about OceanGate from TV people who crossed paths with the company. Expedition Unknown host Josh Gates says that the show had a “huge opportunity” to film an expedition down to the Titanic on the Titan, but that after one voyage on the vessel they chose to not go on a second due to safety concerns.

And Mike Reiss, a writer and former showrunner on The Simpsons, revealed in an interview that he has gone on three dives with OceanGate, and he’s not hopeful. “I know the logistics of it and I know how vast the ocean is and how very tiny this craft is,” he told BBC Breakfast. “If it’s down at the bottom, I don’t know how anyone is going to be able to access it, much less bring it back up. … I got on the sub and at the back of my mind was ‘well, I may never get off this thing,’ that’s always with you,’ he said. He also told a different interviewer that the comms went out on every dive he went on At the same time, he defended the company, comparing it to the early days of space exploration. (Except we’ve been exploring the deep ocean for decades now, and there are plenty of subs that are safe and regulated, unlike this one.)

Bryan Cranston is one of our greatest living actors:

Billy Crystal, Barry Gibb, Queen Latifah, Dionne Warwick, and Renée Fleming are the next Kennedy Center Honorees.

After talking to David Zaslav about the executive shakeups at TCM, Steven Speilberg, Martin Scorsese, and Paul Thomas Anderson have released a statement saying that they “… are heartened and encouraged by the conversations we’ve had thus far, and we are committed to working together to ensure the continuation of this cultural touchstone that we all treasure.”

Geraldo Rivera has said more about leaving Fox News:

“There has been a growing tension that goes beyond editorial differences and personal annoyances and gripes,” Rivera continued. “It’s not worth it to me.” He described working on “The Five” as a work environment that was “too intimate” and “too personal,” where he seemingly implied that “friction” was often created.

He said his relationship with his “The Five” coworkers was a “reflection of what the country is going through.”

“It’s not an easy job if you take it as personally as I do,” Rivera said.

Did Bruce Campbell just announce his retirement?! NO. I reject this.

Sad news about Jack Hanna: the animal advocate and staple of late-night shows has advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Thoughts go out to his family and friends in this difficult time for a man who gave so much to so many.

Writer’s Strike Update:

Yesterday marked the 50th day of the writers’ strike. The previous strike in 2007-2008 lasted for 99 days.

On-location filming in Los Angeles has ground to a halt as a result of the strike.

The Primetime Emmys may be delayed until 2024 if there is not an end to the strike by the beginning of August. They will more likely be pushed to November, but it all depends on how long the strike lasts.

Other productions that have been paused because of the strike: 1923; Daredevil: Born Again; The Penguin; Zero Day; Etoile. As mentioned earlier this week, the Sam Esmail series Metropolis at Apple TV+ has been canceled as the strike continues.

The summer Television Critics Association summer tour was canceled due to the strike. This is a blow to the studios who used the TCAs to promote upcoming series.

The strike is also impacting release dates on movies that won’t come to theaters until 2026 and 2027.

A producer of the Starz series BMF has been suspended after threatening strikers with his SUV.

Meanwhile, crew members working on American Horror Story claim they’ve been told that if they don’t cross the picket lines to work they will be “black-balled” on all other Ryan Murphy projects. Ryan Murphy denies this.

Interesting: soap operas will not go dark, even if SAG-AFTRA goes on strike at the end of this month. The writing has been handed over to “fi-core and other non-member writers” and soap actors’ contracts are under a different code than other SAG-AFTRA members.

And one of the things that I didn’t point out about that Taylor Sheridan interview in The Hollywood Reporter is his irritation at the idea that he might be forced to hire writers. “If they tell me, ‘You’re going to have to write a check for $540,000 to four people to sit in a room that you never have to meet,’ then that’s between the studio and the guild. But if I have to check in creatively with others for a story I’ve wholly built in my brain, that would probably be the end of me telling TV stories.” I mean, I get it, Sheridan is a one-man show. But for someone who claims to support the WGA and the strike, he has to know that this is music to the studios’ ears.
