Obituary: The dark little Irish comedy about an obituary writer who begins murdering folks is back for a second season. Season premiere. Hulu

Guts & Glory: This new horror competition series from horror special effects guru and horror producer Greg Nicotero places competitors in immersive situations. AMC+ & Shudder

A Nightmare on Elm Street marathon: The Freddy Krueger saga. (Some sequels begin earlier in the morning, completely out of order, by the way.) 7 p.m., AMC

Murdaugh: Death in the Family: This dramatization of the deadly Murdaugh saga, starring Jason Clarke and Patricia Arquette, is based on the popular Murdaugh Murders Podcast. Series premiere. Hulu

Ghost Adventures: Season 30 will premiere today only on Discovery+, but it will return on Discovery and HBO Max on October 29. Season premiere. Discovery+

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage: Georgie and Ruben realize they can’t agree on anything. Season premiere. 7 p.m., CBS

Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy: This limited series explores the horrific crimes of John Wayne Gacy, the evil clown who murdered some 33 young men. Premiere. Peacock

The Crazies: Timothy Olyphant stars in this 2010 horror film about a mysterious toxin that turns citizens of a small Iowa town into murderous lunatics, which sort of sounds like what we’ve been going through for the past decade. 9:54 p.m., Starz Encore Classic

FRIDAY

Fire Country: In the aftermath of the Zabel Ridge fire, Station 42 faces inner turmoil. Season premiere. 7 p.m., CBS

Sheriff Country: Morena Baccarin stars as a straight-shooting sheriff in the small town of Edgewater, who has to deal with her ex-con father and a mysterious incident involving her wayward daughter. Series premiere.  8 p.m., CBS

Boston Blue: Donnie Wahlberg reprises his Blue Bloods role of NYPD officer Danny Reagan, as he takes a new job with the Boston PD. Series premiere. 9 p.m., CBS

Mr. Scorsese: A five-part documentary about the legendary director, as told through interviews with his family and friends, including Robert De Niro, Mick Jagger, Steven Spielberg, and many others. Premiere. Apple TV+

The Perfect Neighbor: This documentary explores the controversial murder of Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, and the use of deadly stand-your-ground laws. Premiere. Netflix

Hollywood Hustler: Glitz, Glam, Scam: This documentary follows the life of Zach Horwitz, an aspiring actor who pulled off an audacious financial fraud in his pursuit of Hollywood power. Premiere. Prime Video

The Guest: This thriller follows a young woman who begins cleaning house for a powerful older woman who encourages her to take control of her own life, only to find herself helping covering up a murder. Series premiere: Paramount+ with Showtime

40 Acres: The descendants of African-American farmers who settled in rural Canada after the Civil War try to survive in an apocalyptic future. Premiere.: Hulu

Downey Wrote That: A documentary about Jim Downey, SNL‘s longest-running writer, and his now-legendary contributions to the comedy series. Peacock

The Lost Boys: Teenage brothers and their single mother move to a California beach town only to find it’s overrun with vampires. Which, when you think of it, isn’t the best environment for vampires? Anyway, a Gen X classic right here. 8:45 p.m., IFC

SATURDAY

Saturday Night Live: Sabrina Carpenter hosts and is the musical guest. 10:30 p.m., NBC

Poltergeist: The movie that made me love horror movies. 7 p.m., BBC America

Frankenstein: Not the Jacob Elordi one, the Boris Karloff one.  7 p.m., TCM

SUNDAY

Tracker: Jensen Ackles is back for the third season premiere. 7 p.m., CBS

2025 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards: I’m embarrassed that I hadn’t heard of this horror film awards ceremony until just now, but they celebrate the best in scary movies. And this year’s nominations are a doozy, between Sinners, Longlegs, The Substance, Bring Her Back, Heretic, Nosferatu, and the others, the voters have a hard choice ahead of them. 8 p.m., Shudder

Misery: Kathy Bates’ Oscar-winning performance is a masterclass, “dirty birdie.”  7 p.m., Sundance
