Empire was renewed at Fox for a sixth season but it looks like it will be returning without Jussie Smollett. He hasn’t been fired though. Fox released a statement that read: “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for Season 6, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire.” So, basically, he won’t be in at least the first part of the season but they’re keeping the door open to sneak him back onto the series when the kerfuffle dies down. Hulu hosted its Upfronts this morning, and in addition to the reveal of some renewals and new series (see below), they announced they have reached 28 million subscribers — about half of Netflix’s subscribers. Still! That’s pretty good growth, especially coupled with the fact that the total hours viewed has increased 75% last year. Hulu has also announced they will be expanding “pause ads” — ads that appear when the viewer pauses a show.
Meanwhile, over at Netflix, they want to give you studio-quality sound.
Rob Thomas is threatening to go all Game of Thrones in the final season of iZombie and kill off all of the characters.
Salem’s Lot is going to play a large role in the second season of Castle Rock. Apparently, the two towns are going to find themselves involved in some sort of conflict.
