So, last I left you, Scott Pelley had been fired by CBS News, and he put out a statement revealing he had been instructed to “inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified,” under the new management at 60 Minutes.

Following the firing, Bari Weiss told the CBS News staff that ahead of firing Pelley, she and other executives tried to engage with him, only to determine they “couldn’t find a way back,” and they “had to part ways.” Pelley released another statement calling bullshit:

“At no point did anyone in the Tuesday meeting suggest that there would be steps taken by either side that would lead to a resolution,” Pelley said. He said that Weiss and CBS News President Tom Cibrowski were “openly hostile from the start. ‘Firing’ was raised by Cibrowski in the first 15 seconds. No CBS executive, at any time, suggested ‘a way back.’ To say so now is disingenuous. And they know it.”

Understandably, the remaining staff at 60 Minutes are anxious.

Tony Dokoupil was trotted out to pay tribute to Scott Pelley’s work at CBS News.

Rachel Maddow hopes Pelley joins her over on MS Now:

“There’s nothing else going on at CBS News other than what we can see is happening at CBS News. And I don’t know where Scott Pelley will land. Frankly, I hope he lands right here. I hope he’s on TV tomorrow. I hope that everybody in journalism and everybody who values a free press figures out ways to outmaneuver the people who are trying to take the free press from us.”

Meanwhile, Scott Pelley went to the New York Times podcast, The Interview, and made a bunch more news, including accusing Weiss of demanding he manipulate his reporting on the Minneapolis ICE protests this past winter:

Hours before the broadcast, Pelley’s boss got an email from Weiss. “Two of the things in the email include, ‘Can we make the protesters look more violent?’ Now, I’m paraphrasing. I don’t have the quote, but that’s what was communicated to me. And the other thing, Renee Good’s car. ‘You need to describe her as driving toward the officer,’” Pelley told The Interview.

Pelley also had thoughts about President Coward’s criticisms of him, namely that he “doesn’t care about the country.”

When asked if Weiss should be fired, Pelley replied, “Oh, gosh, yes,” before adding, “There’s a subtle political bias that I’ve never seen at 60 Minutes before, or at CBS News before. So that is my hope: a return to sanity,” he said. “We can save this. It’s possible to land this plane. But right now, CBS News is on fire.”

The WGA decried the firing of Pelley, calling it a “profound contempt for the journalism profession.”

Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim released a statement saying they are going to stick with 60 Minutes, but added they have misgivings.

Stahl went on to call this “the hardest chapter” of her career. “It’s been over 50 years. This was by far the worst experience I’ve been involved in, or even witnessed. I mean, firing seven people, including the entire management team over here, plus reporters and producers…” And yet, she chooses to stick around and give the show her credibility. OK.

Paramount promises to give 60 Minutes “editorial independence.” 

Meanwhile, Paramount is looking to find a business executive to work with Bari Weiss. LOL, GEE, WHY?

Oh, and of course, that turd Brendan Carr felt the need to weigh in on all of this.
