‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ goes dark tonight and late night will never be the same

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

Tonight is the premature series finale for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and I’M REALLY NOT HAPPY ABOUT IT. Everything about the cancellation is infuriating and scary, whether it was entirely political or entirely financial or something in between. Either way, it doesn’t bode well for the television industry as a whole or, worse, the direction we are going as a country, and there’s plenty of reason to be wringing your hands.

Colbert, on the other hand, is taking a much broader view of things and even managing to find gratitude in the end of his show:

Now, he wonders if CBS “saved my life” because “it takes a lot of bone marrow to do the show every day, and now I’ll be stepping down with enough time, enough energy to do other things that I want to do.”

Whatever Colbert does for his finale tonight, it won’t be a repeat of the end of The Colbert Report. Also, the episode will be “extended” so set your DVRs accordingly.

As for how he’s spent his final week:

On Monday, Colbert spent the entire episode celebrating his staff, with “The Worst of The Late Show.” This was my favorite segment, but the entire episode is worth watching.

On Tuesday, Colbert burned down the house after spending time with his dear friend, Jon Stewart.

Last night, Colbert took his own Questionert with the help of a ton of celebrities.

And Bruce Springsteen performed. He had no fucks left to give:

“I’m here in support tonight for Stephen, because you’re the first guy in America who has lost his show because we got a president who can’t take a joke. And because Larry and David Ellison feel they need to kiss his ass to get what they want. Anyway, Stephen, these are small-minded people. They got no idea what the freedoms of this beautiful country are supposed to be about.”

He also donated $2.5 million to José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen:

The other late-night hosts said their goodbyes to Stephen Colbert:

Jimmy Kimmel urged viewers to tune in tonight and then never watch CBS again:

Fallon signed off his show last night, saying, “Stay tuned for Late Night with Seth Meyers. And Stephen, have a great show tomorrow. We’ll be watching. Good night everybody.”

Andy Cohen gave Colbert his Mazel of the Day: “Our Mazel of the Day goes to our friend Stephen Colbert, who will host the final episode of The Late Show this Thursday after his 11-year run. Late night will not be the same these days. Where else can we turn for the unique perspective of the straight white male?”

And Seth Meyers called it a sad week for television:

“I’m heartbroken,” the host of Late Night with Seth Meyers tells Deadline in an exclusive interview. “It’s very sad to lose a colleague and even sadder to lose a time slot. It would be one thing if Stephen was leaving and a younger person was getting a chance to have one of these jobs that are — as someone who’s experienced it — so exciting to have. So just in general, I think it’s a very sad week for television in America.”

The Guardian shares their top 10 Late Show moments over the years, and many of them demonstrate what makes Stephen Colbert different from the other cynics in late night: his deep faith, sincerity and humanity.

So what’s next for Stephen Colbert? He has plans. And I suspect he’ll be back on our screens again soon enough. Hey Netflix? You know what would be a hilarious way to get back at Paramount?

As Chef Andrés said, Stephen Colbert is the best of us. I hope he enjoys some time off, but comes back soon.

One thing Hayden Pantierre is not going to do is attack Connie Britton.

I mean, I’d argue that a Chicago Dog is the official Chicago sandwich but then that gets us into the whole, “Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich” controversy, and God knows we don’t want to go there.

This isn’t TV news, but I don’t care, I’m including it because it’s a great idea, and I can’t wait for the racists to lose their goddamned minds over it.

Speaking of racists, Chelsea Handler is not wrong here; those assholes are racist.

Jeff Bezos and his autotuned face want you to know that producing the Melania movie was a great business decision that he had nothing to do with. OK. Pay more taxes, shitheel.

Democrats are still screaming the alarm over the Paramount/Warner Bros. deal, but it’s going to fall on deaf ears.

That jackass who tried to take over Jeopardy! has now taken over The Daily Caller. That tracks.

Questlove is tasked with choosing a musical sketch for the perfect SNL episode on The Rundown:
