Quick update from Houston in the aftermath of Beryl: It’s not great. Thanks to our energy provider CenterPoint not preparing ahead of time for this storm, we still have 1.3 million homes without power with heat indexes reaching 106º. In fact, CenterPoint is so inept, Texans were turning to Whataburger’s app to try to figure out where power has been restored.

Come, hither, you amazing linemen! It isn’t too hot yet, but it will be! #hurricaneberyl #linemenoftiktok #thankalineman #texascheck #fypシ゚viral #Meme #MemeCut

Our governor is MIA, and President Biden had to literally chase Lt. Governor Dan Patrick down to authorize releasing federal aid, delaying it by a day. The cynic in me thinks this was a deliberate move by our Republican leadership to make it appear that the federal government was inept, but it also could have just been incompetence.

In any event, while we certainly weren’t hit as hard as we were in Alison, Ike, or Harvey — we are fortunately not dealing with catastrophic flooding on top of power outages — we are not out of the woods thanks to a combination of a lack of preparation and incompetence on the parts of both our energy provider and our government.

And please let this situation serve as two gentle reminders: one to my fellow Texans and one to those of you outside of Texas. First to my Texans: We can change this. We can vote in different leadership. We are not powerless. In fact, there are more of us than there are of them. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, please watch this video all the way through and check your voter registration:

And for those of you outside of Texas who are taking a certain glee at us “getting what we deserve” because of the way we vote: you’re just wrong. Houston is a blue city. In fact, more people in the state of Texas voted for President Biden than people in the state of New York. So when those of us here in the state who are doing the hard work to turn this state blue, or at least purple, see those of you on our side in safe blue states like New York or California mocking our suffering, it fucking sucks. Either do what you can to help us turn this mess around or sit down and shut up.

Here’s A BUNCH OF TV News

A bit of good news to start: Jimmy Kimmel reports that his 7-year-old son Billy is doing “great” after another open-heart surgery.

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F has been a hit for Netflix, unsurprisingly.

David Duchovny could have been one of the dads on Full House. WELL, THANK GOD THAT DIDN’T HAPPEN.

Things that irritate your trusty blogger: actors bitching about their jobs.

Claim to Fame returns tonight, and here’s everything you need to know about my favorite ridiculous summer series.

Phaedra Parks might be in negotiations to return to The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

CNN is about to cut more jobs, and launch a new subscription service. Good luck with all that.

This is horrific: John Hunt, a BBC presenter, lost his wife and two daughters in a crossbow attack this morning. Thoughts for his family.

Congratulations to John Mulaney and Olivia Munn.

On the developing President Biden situation:

Whatever happens with President Biden, a reminder of what is at stake. While Former President Hannibal Lecter is out here trying to pretend he has nothing to do with Project 2025 (lies), he has fully embraced his own “Agenda 47” which is just another name for Project 2025:
