Today’s big TV news is the primetime airing of the January 6th hearings tonight. While Fox News will not be broadcasting it live (or any of the hearings), I am happy to report that Fox network will be, along with ABC, CBS, and NBC. It’s also going to air on PBS, CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC, and Fox … Business.

These hearings are arguably the most important in our nation’s history: more important than Watergate, than Iran-Contra, than Benghazi, for sure. This is about democracy, our democracy, and its fragility, and we all need to fucking pay attention. But will we?

Stephen Colbert made an action-packed trailer for the hearings to try to get Americans to PLEASE WATCH. The trailer begins at the 2-minute mark:

And in other political news, for those of you not here in Texas (or for those of you who are, but are, bless you, unaware of this fuckery), one of our state representatives has decided to tackle the biggest threat to Texas children’s safety: family-friendly drag shows. Basically, a bunch of right-wing fascists decided to protest a Dallas drag show that was billed  as “family-friendly,” attacking the parents who took their kids to a fun show and the performers themselves as “groomers.” In the wake of this weekend’s protest, this ding-dong state representative Bryan Slaton is filing a bill to make it illegal for minors to be in attendance at drag shows.

As someone who has taken my children to Pride parades and parades that were considerably raunchier, who has watched RuPaul’s Drag Race with my sons, and who would not have hesitated to take them to a drag show when they were still little, I just can not overstate how stupid, hypocritical, and pointless I find this to be.

First and foremost: you can not “groom” someone to be gay. That’s just not how human sexuality works. As the great George Takei pointed out, he was “groomed” his entire life to be straight—it didn’t work. 

Second of all, this whole movement that includes the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida, is based on this presumption that everything “gay” is sexual, whereas anything heteronormative isn’t — that’s just “normal.” According to this logic, drag shows are trying to turn our kids gay, whereas taking the family to Hooters is perfectly normal and not sexual; and toddler beauty pageants aren’t a form of grooming young girls to adopt a certain feminine image; and that putting teen girls in short cheerleading skirts isn’t about appealing to the male gaze. We are surrounded by examples of kids being sexualized or exposed to heteronormative sexuality but these people never stop to think about it, because it’s presumed to be the norm.

Third, I would like the right to explain to me as a parent when my rights are first and foremost, and when they don’t apply. The right would like some parents to have a loud say in what their children are taught in school—or not taught if it’s about race or sex—but they don’t trust other parents to make choices to raise their children empathetically, to expose them to different lifestyles, or even parent their own child if they are trans. It’s insane.

But fourth, and most importantly, it has only been two weeks since 19 elementary students were massacred in their school with a weapon of war that was legally purchased by an 18-year-old, and THIS is what the right is focused on? THIS is how they’re going to “protect” kids?

I’m talking about Dave Chappelle’s latest Netflix special!” the Bros star joked, adding, “Oh, come at me! I don’t have Jamie Foxx to defend me, but I have Rosie O’Donnell and the entire Gay Men’s Chorus!”
