President Biden announced yesterday that the United States will not be sending any government representatives to the Beijing Winter Olympics as a protest of China’s human rights abuses. American athletes will be allowed to compete. This certainly adds to the pressure some have put on NBCUniversal to not cover these Games, but I promise you, they aren’t going to cave. NBC is definitely going to air the Winter Olympics, and they’ll make a mess of it the same way they did the Tokyo Games. As for whether I’ll recap them, having not recapped Tokyo, I’m not sure yet. I will say that I have a lot of reservations about it.
Pastor Craig Duke of the Newburgh United Methodist Church in Newburgh, Indiana, participated in We’re Here, HBO’s drag series, to show that he supports the LGBTQ community and his queer daughter, and to try to open some dialogue within the church itself. Welp, he was fired for his empathy. To Pastor Craig’s profound credit, he knew this was a possibility, but he took the chance in the hopes of changing his church’s position on gay rights. I’m not in the least bit surprised, but it’s still heartbreaking. You are a good man, Pastor Craig.
