#MeToo
The big, heartbreaking, disturbing news over the past few weeks has been the bombshell ID documentary, Quiet on the Set, which detailed the rampant abuses on children’s television, specifically that of Nickelodeon creator Dan Schneider, and the pedophilia charges against two of his employees, Brian Peck and Jason Handy.
The four- (to be five-) part documentary outlined a number of offenses, the most horrific belonging to Jason Handy’s grooming of countless victims, and the sexual abuse of Nickelodeon superstar Drake Bell at the hands of Brian Peck. Bell himself came forward to tell the story of his repeated abuses when he was 15 in this documentary, a heartbreaking and powerful story, and to call out the Hollywood players who stood by Peck during his court sentencing. Bell claims that he has not heard from any of the 41 people who wrote letters in support of Peck since the documentary aired.
Recently, two Boy Meets World actors, Will Friedle, and Rider Strong, spoke on their podcast about their support of Peck at the time, and their regret at having done so. Bell has released a statement that suggests he doesn’t believe their sincerity.
More appallingly, stars of another Schneider series, Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide, brutally mocked Bell and his abuse in a recent podcast. Unsurprisingly, Bell was not amused.
Ned’s Declassless…this is wild…laugh it up guys…laugh it up…”Give me your h*les?!!” Really?! https://t.co/pD2ZYdd2gG

As for Bell’s Drake and Josh co-star, Josh Peck, Bell has said that he has reached out privately, and urged people to not attack him. Peck then released his own statement on Instagram:
Nickelodeon has since put out a statement: “Now that Drake Bell has disclosed his identity as the plaintiff in the 2004 case, we are dismayed and saddened to learn of the trauma he has endured, and we commend and support the strength required to come forward.”
All of this has been complicated by the fact that Bell himself was recently charged with being inappropriate with a minor. He took a plea deal, and obliquely referred to it in the documentary. He also was accused of verbal and physical abuse by an ex-girlfriend, which he has denied. Bell’s supporters are now attacking his accusers in appalling ways. A REMINDER: Both things can be true: Bell can be a victim of horrific abuse, and he could have then gone on to abuse others.
As for Dan Schneider, the documentary suggests that he was abusive in his own ways, sexually harassing his adult employees, underpaying his female writers, and over-sexualizing his underage stars. The A.V. Club has a good breakdown of all the revelations and allegations in the documentary.
Schneider has denied sexualizing his child actors, insisting that people are projecting their “adult minds” onto the scenes in question. (Of course, Schneider himself was an adult with an “adult mind” when he wrote said scenes, so I’m not sure this is quite the defense he might think it is.) He has also released a video apology, though some of his former stars find it lacking.
Some other Nick stars have come forward to discuss their own experiences since watching the documentary:
@missalliedimeco TV talk brought to you by me and #mightypatch #iykyk 🥸 #quietonset #mystory #nbb #nakedbeothersband #nickelodeon #PTSD #theick #absolutelymental #kidactor
Others have extended their support, including Melissa Joan Hart who says she believes the accusers 100%, and Kenan Thompson who has called for more investigations.
Other stars, notably Amanda Bynes and Ariana Grande, two of Schneiders’ “favorites,” have declined to participate in or comment on the documentary.
Blue’s Clues‘ Steve Burns took to TikTok to check in on the whole generation traumatized by the documentary:
@hioutthereitsmesteve
steve really realizes that sometimes only he can check in on the kids he raised. it's something. https://t.co/uHQiKgHjTy
