Instead of finishing the books, George R.R. Martin gave an interview to Leonard Maltin for his podcast, where Martin doubted the Game of Thrones spinoffs will match the popularity of the original series. But more interestingly, he and Maltin discussed the nature of fandom and how much it has changed in the Internet age from the more innocent days of fanzines.

The two discussed how the Internet has given fans a bigger voice, although Martin said far too often, the conversation can spiral into “madness.”

“The Internet is toxic in a way that the old fanzine culture and fandoms — comics fans, science fiction fans in those days – was not,” Martin explained.

“There were disagreements. There were feuds, but nothing like the madness that you see on the Internet,” he continued.

And now I take you back to 2011 when George R.R. Martin had some feelings about how Lost ended:

We watched [Lost] every week trying to figure it out, and as it got deeper and deeper I kept saying, ‘They better have something good in mind for the end. This better pay off here.’ And then I felt so cheated when we got to the conclusion.” Martin also cites the Lost ending as the type of mistake he fears making with his own show, saying, “I want to give them something terrific. What if I f— it up at the end? What if I do a Lost? Then they’ll come after me with pitchforks and torches.”

You know who remembers? The North Damon Lindelof remembers.

In other Game of Thrones news, apparently, there was a scene from season 8 that was cut that showed Cersei miscarrying. It’s a shame — we really could have used a whole lot more Cersei in that final season. I’m not sure that showing her miscarrying would have added much, I think the mystery of her pregnancy was actually beneficial to the show, keeping everyone including the characters and audience guessing as to whether or not she was just being manipulative again. But I genuinely wish she had been given more to do in the final episodes.

And in what would have been a VERY COOL scene that never made it to the scripts (but will hopefully be in the books), in the Battle of Winterfell, Viserion was originally supposed to have been attacked by a pack of 50 direwolves. I imagine this pack would have (may still be) lead by Nymeria, Arya’s direwolf, but who knows. In any event, GOD DAMMIT, I WANTED A PACK OF 50 DIREWOLVES. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN SO FUCKING COOOOOOOL.

You’ll be able to buy the complete series Blu-Rays on December 3, just in time for the holidays.

In some much needed good news, Pop TV has picked up One Day at a Time, saving it from cancelation. The series will return in 2020.

Oh, and the NYPD detective who made the first arrests in the case, he’s not a fan of the series, either, for some reason. Meanwhile, some 23 million people have watched the series, so I guess it doesn’t matter what this jackass or Donald Trump thinks.

  1. You think that the army of direwolfs would have been controlled by Bran? That way he would have done something.
    Also I hate it when groups take symbols from history and make them their own. Battle of Gonzales Flag, Gasden Flag etc.
