UPDATED! AGAIN! Everything we know about The CW’s 2018-2019 season … so far

HI GUYS! So Upfronts begin next week and I AM A LITTLE STRESSED OUT. Cancelations, renewals, series orders, THERE IS JUST A WHOLE LOT GOING ON RIGHT NOW AND IT’S HARD TO KEEP UP, QUITE HONESTLY, SOMEONE FETCH ME A RESTORATIVE COCKTAIL.

This post is an attempt to organize what we know about what The CW has in store for the fall season: all the new shows, all the renewed shows and, R.I.P. — all the canceled shows. News is fluid right now, so check back in as I will continue to update these posts.

The CW’s Upfront presentation is in the morning of Thursday, May 17th. By then, we should have photos, trailers, a schedule and a full list of The CW’s renewed and canceled series. I will add that information as it comes in. Send … you know what? Send all the candy. That’s all I want at this point: candy.

A few notes ahead of The CW’s upfront presentation (still waiting for pictures, CW): Along with their fall schedule, the network announced this morning that this upcoming season will be iZombie, Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend‘s last. (Sigh.) Additionally, iZombie, and Jane the Virgin are being held until midseason, along with The 100 and new series Roswell, New Mexico and In the Dark.

New Shows

Ray Mickshaw / The CW
All American

Description from The CW:

When a rising high school football player from South Central L.A. is recruited to play for Beverly Hills High, the wins, losses and struggles of two families from vastly different worlds — Compton and Beverly Hills — begin to collide. Inspired by the life of pro football player Spencer Paysinger.

Cast: Daniel Ezra, Taye Diggs, Samantha Logan, Bre-Z, Greta Onieogou, Monet Mazur, Michael Evans Behling, Cody Christian, Karimah Westbrook

T’s Take:

Nope. UPDATE: One large part Friday Night Lights divided by The OC with a dash of Beverly Hills 90210. I can’t lie, it looks better than I initially thought.

Annette Brown / The CW
Legacies

Description from The CW:

Continuing the tradition of “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” the story of the next generation of supernatural beings at The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Klaus Mikaelson’s daughter, 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson; Alaric Saltzman’s twins, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman; and other young adults come of age in the most unconventional way possible, nurtured to be their best selves…in spite of their worst impulses. Will these young witches, vampires and werewolves become the heroes they want to be — or the villains they were born to be?

T’s Take:

Nope. UPDATE: No trailer, so I can’t even be judgey about it.

Katie Yu / The CW
Charmed

Description from The CW:

When Melanie “Mel” Vera and her sister Maggie lose their mother in a horrifying accident it shatters their world and threatens their sibling bond. Then they get another huge shock: they have an older sister, brilliant geneticist Macy, whom their mother kept a secret all these years. With the emotions of the newly-reunited sisters running high, each of the girls suddenly exhibit impossible new abilities. But don’t worry, there’s a perfectly reasonable explanation to all of it…or so says Harry Greenwood when he gathers the three sisters together to reveal they’re actually powerful witches, as was their mother. It’s a lot to take in for the sisters, but they ultimately accept their new destiny as The Charmed Ones, and their new duty to protect humankind from the demons that walk among us.

Cast: Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, Sara Jeffrey, Rupert Evans, Ser’Darius Blain, Charlie Gillespie, Ellen Tamaki

T’s Take:

Maybe. UPDATE: Eh. The trailer is a little on the nose with its SISTERHOOD! thing, but it’s from the creator of Jane the Virgin who does aspirational female relationships better than just about anyone. I have a feeling this will be one of those, “Give it More Than Just the Pilot” kind of shows. Although I have to say the casting of Melonie Diaz and Sara Jeffrey as sisters is remarkable.

Roswell, New Mexico – Midseason

Description from The CW:

After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance. Based on the Roswell High book series by Melinda Metz.

Cast: Jeanine Mason, Nathan Parsons, Lily Cowles, Michael Vlamis, Heather Hemmens, Michael Trevino, Trevor St. John

T’s Take:

Nope.

In the Dark – Midseason

Description from The CW:

Murphy is a hard-living, hard-drinking, disaffected twentysomething with a penchant for cigarettes and casual sex. She’s also blind. Murphy lives with her understanding roommate, Jess, and more reluctantly also lives with her guide dog, Pretzel, whose presence she resents. Murphy’s life comes crashing down when, while out for a walk with Pretzel, she stumbles upon what she’s sure is the lifeless body of her troubled friend Tyson in the alley outside her apartment. But when the police arrive there is no body to be found – and with Murphy not exactly sober, the police aren’t especially inclined to investigate. Murphy is devastated, and is only held back from spiraling downward even further by her resolve to learn what happened to Tyson … even if it means she has to sober up a little. Pilot written by Corinne Kingsbury and directed by Michael Showalter.
Cast: Perry Mattfeld, Austin Nichols, Kathleen York, Derek Webster, Brooke Markham, Keston John

T’s Take:

Nope. UPDATE: Well… maybe. Look, I was irritated with The CW over not picking up “Wayward Sisters,” a decision I still just don’t quite get. And the logline for this one, “Blind detective!” coupled with that punny title, made me less inclined to give it a chance. However, this longer description coupled with the fact that it was directed by Michael Showalter, makes it sound more like Search Party or Blind Veronica Mars, so color me intrigued. Of all The CW’s new shows, I am now officially most interested in this one.

  1. So the CW passed on Wayward Sisters. Just wrong. Good premise, good cast, great characters, and a built-in audience … and better than some of the new shows they’ve announced. (In the Dark sounds promising, Charmed will depend on the cast, the others have been done before and are meh at best.) Maybe it’ll be a mid-season replacement.
